I’m in a lot of fandom spaces, so I’ve seen “pathetic” used in an affectionate tone to describe characters sometimes. Still condescending though, especially here.
Also, confirmation that this is supposed to be some rural, conservative town for the sake of “right bad, Christians bad, homophobia bad”. I still think it adds nothing to the story other than weird tonal shifts. And as stated before, it doesn’t work when a flamboyant flamingo is a teacher, and the way SnP goes about portraying it is really weird. I also can’t tell if the 2019 thing is a joke or not. I hope so, because I do not need 5 year old Covid sperging in my life (hell, I was making a setting around that year and made it a timeline where Covid never happened).
I also don’t want to gloss over the inspiration for this comic.

It’s probably more likely that it was just someone roleplaying that, like a lot of DID fakers on the internet these days. But assuming it wasn’t, can you imagine how fucking scary it would be for the person, including their friends and family (ooo, there we are with Kai!)? What kind of trauma needs to happen for someone to fall to that level? I cannot emphasize enough how much there is some genuine horror to this, and she doesn’t care or notice because it’s all “Hehe, gotta have that positive mental illness rep!”

Assuming DID even is real, the roleplay community is absolutely FILLED with people who think they have multiple personalities because they talk like their favorite characters enough, is there a single credible mental health source around this totally real illness that she's ever even touched in the past?

Unrelated, but this takes me back to the days of whenever the Steven Universe cast were talking about behind the scenes stuff, and it always became rapidly clear the background artists were the only ones who actually knew what the fuck they were doing.

Pipe Up! has returned to its usual Wednesday/Saturday upload schedule, with chapter 4 now going live:

Yes, all of the chapter titles are this convoluted. Apparently, they’re references to various songs. Halsey + The Crane Wives lent their lyrics to the last two chapters’ titles, while this chapter’s title is apparently from a Dodie song. I know basically nothing about modern music, so I don’t know anything about these bands, but something tells me that they don’t tend to attract very sane people to their work.

Judging from the complaining about a “mall” in the author Q&A and the appearance of Quinn on the cover here, I can only imagine that this chapter is going to be some sort of weird edgy tantrum that ends up with Kai and Percy having a proper falling-out over something dumb.

Anyways, the cover was uploaded yesterday, but we only got the first real page of the chapter today. It involves Kai being depressed for… reasons.

God knows why. Wasn’t he over the moon last we saw him? He was dancing around and hugging Percy because Percy said he’d go to prom with him or whatever. Either the authors forgot the mood of their own damn story, or we’re about to find out whatever got Kai down through this nondescript chat app. The latter, of course, would be a more reasonable explanation… if only this comic were made by a half-decent writer.

…actually, come to think of it, why did he ask Piper out to the dance?

Wasn’t Kai supposed to be gay? Wasn’t Piper supposed to be super apprehensive about committing to things without Percy? Isn’t this essentially the equivalent of letting your sister’s friend get your corpse paraded around as his date because he likes your body?

I’m thinking about this too hard.

This is that furry superhero thing I warned about a while back. I have no idea how she’s going to handle updating this alongside her existing three at the same time, especially since she is no longer taking any time off.

The second one is actually really good, I’m surprised that didn’t get first place. I think all of these people look like (arguably) better artists than SnP, so it’s kinda laughable that their prizes are worse art from her.

I’m surprised Egge was allowed to enter, even if it’s for a comic she didn’t (?) work on. The second place entry being better isn’t uncommon. If I had to guess, the first place entry has more of her sensibilities (that quote is like those song-quote-chapter-names she likes to use). Not to mention it’s overt enough for her to get.

Communities like theirs are hyperaware that people see them as groomers; they’ll attack each other for sexualizing* minors (see Ava’s Demon controversy). Also the designs, while competent, are generic. They look more like side or background characters. Kai and Piper stand out a little more since they have accessories, but none of them have a “hook.” Even Quinn’s “symbolic” scars make him look generic. Also, you don’t want to get close to them. Harper,* Niko, etc have very unappealing personalities.

Took in this whole thread in one sitting, Pipe Up managed to piss me off quite a bit.

Wouldn't be surprised if SnP turned out to be ableist, but in the Sia sort of way where she claims to be doing neurodivergent a favor while actually patronizing them and downplaying their agency as people. Sort of like another bad webseries did; My Pride by TribbleofDoom. It's similar to SnP's work, just with "gay Lion King" branding.

Kai's father doesn't look like the respected gentleman Percy's dad described. He doesn't sound like the type of rabbit that would hang out with trailer trash either.

On another note, I dearly hope this doesn't end with Queer Quinn beating or intimidating the bullies into respecting Kai's pronouns. I mean my expectations are low but given how the comic is going...

I'm honestly not sure if it would be worse for Kai to randomly get jumped JUST to continue reinforcing how much his life sucks when he's not depending on Percy, or for Quinn, still in the body of a tiny rabbit, to heroically jump in to save him, when even fucking Kai could probably eat him by virtue of being a fox.

Older works used to have messages about forgiveness being inherently good, but like you said, that's getting increasingly rarer.

Keep in mind that 'forgiving the oppressors' just means any work that suggests anything less than total revenge fantasy. There's no scale of response; you either condone any and all forms of retaliation or you're a bootlicker advocating for the oppressed to suck their oppressor's dick.

For example: Every few months twitter brings up how The Last Airbender advocates for 'forgiving the oppressors' because two extremist characters are considered monstrous despite the injustices against them for wanting to murder and/or torture innocent people simply for being citizens of the enemy country. Thinking that children don't deserve to be drowned for where they were born is considered the same as bowing down to your oppressors, and acknowledging that extremists exist and the slippery slope of normalizing horrific actions is bad/bigoted writing.
