Japan doesn't really have "Universal Healthcare" like how Pat wants it, it's more based on the German model.

Japan doesn't have a "near total" gun ban, they're just very selective and like a lot of heavily urbanized countries they don't allow handguns. The Japanese equivalent of the NRA have called for the regulations to be loosened because there are a lot of wild animals in Hokkaido cities. Long guns are available but you have to be very precise with the counting of spent ammo and besides, the regulations were literally put in place after the war by GHQ's diktat in order so that there wouldn't be a rebellion against the American occupiers.

What is important is, that like the UK, you have to pass a safety exam, be of sound mind, and be able to have a gun safe in your house.

Health insurance is mandatory and many hospitals are privately owned, along with private clinics. (But don't expect to see anyone there in the private clinics if you're a gaikokujin; sometimes a nurse will cross her arms and shake her head at you)
