Pies have steam vents and I do not recognise the legitimacy of any pie filling in one contiguous block. It's a steak dumpling.
Beef Wellington is an aboriginal nigger.

It is not a calzone, those are folded over. The rolled version is stromboli.
I declare the Wellington a savory turnover.

(chicken and dumplings) This is an interesting one. What, precisely, would one define the meal as?
They used to put that on the side of bisquick pancake mix. And it worked because it's tasty and fast and something a True American would ingest. Would I call that a dumpling though, no, tbh, because dumplings typically have a filling, that's the point. A bisquick dumpling is like a cloud you eat and that's something else entirely.

imo a dumpling is any food which uses a carb to completely seal in moisture of whatever is inside it, cooking it in its own juices and savory. this is the absolute peak of any food. I love dumplings in every cuisine I've ever had them in and I've noticed inferior cultures do not have dumplings. I am not referring to grain balls, I don't know why shit like Kartoffelkloesse or Knoedel is considered a dumpling.
'Dumpling' classically means a lump of dough - things like knaidlach and dombolo are true dumplings in the original sense, which were meant to give bulk to otherwise thin dishes. I love German cuisine but I wouldn't serve knoedel to somebody I was trying to convince of its greatness.

The better point to make is that what are thought of as classic filled dumplings (your jiaozi, momos, ravioli and others) aren't true dumplings; they have more in common with conventional European pastry like pies, rolls and Beef Wellingtons - ergo, filled dumplings are Wellingtons. The technique of filled dumplings just isn't recognised as its own class of food.

Leaving aside the inferior cultures you have in mind, using pastry to seal in moisture just takes different forms. For example, India uses 'dum' cooking, where they seal off a clay pot full of meat and spices with flexible pastry and slow cook it in its own steam, typical of a biriyani.

I dont think it's fair to call it a dumpling considering beef wellingtons are always of a significant size.
Size matters not - again, they shouldn't be called dumplings.

That said, sucking hot soup through a straw like a clueless pleb is really peak food culture.

Beef wellington is a main dish, dumplings are appetizers. It's too big to be a dumpling.

Empanadas are a fried dumpling. Apple and caramel empanadas with ice cream are peak dessert.

I'm not sure if the Taco Bell version is good but apparently they have them.

Beef Wellington is British.
British cuisine and culture is inferior.
So, it must not be a dumpling.
