They're only aware of the Media. Most Media, social and traditional tend to be focused on the US in general. Add in that the US is a significantly bigger country, so there's significantly more crazy stuff going on constantly, it seems bedlam. So you take the experiences in your life, assume it must be worse, and there you go.It's very rare that I can have a conversation about crime with people because most times, I'll have to deal with these brainwashed idiots spewing ideology they don't even understand. It's not limited to Canadians either - I notice Americans are often under the same impression that their country is somehow riddled with way more crime than Canada.
In America its similar: We know the crazy shit going on up there, we never hear of you guys and you are nice. Even when you have a mass killing the numbers are still less than we pull, so how bad can it be?
I live in Northern New York, which is very poor by US standards, and our crime rate is significantly less. I walk around here and see notices from the cops shutting down places for illegally selling weed. I go up to Ottawa and see legitimate looking stores selling nothing but psychadellic mushrooms and I just don't understand how the city can even get to a point where businesses attempt such a thing and succeed
