This is exactly what I've been wanting to convey after seeing his writing in action, thank you so goddamn much. If coders can experience code smell, then Heartbound's writing stinks of whatever the writing equivalent of code smell is. Everything regarding the protagonist's emotional maturity is left down to pure inference and praying that the consoomer projects enough to let it slide. Except at the same time, the protagonist isn't a complete blank slate. Lore has just enough backstory and personality to be their own thing, as if solely to allow the narcissist to jerk themselves off about how above it all they are whenever they want to. Heartbound's protagonist is a Schrodinger's bitch-ass nigga.

Something like "writing smell" or "red flags" I guess? I always thought of certain writing as being "wrong" or off, soul AIDS, especially since writing is more personal than code.

You guys are really onto it. Lore is a self insert, I think so is Baron (after seeing a line of dialogue where Baron says "I always wished I was a Viking, they are so cool!").

Writing is hard, especially for Jason and especially when it comes to redemption. He can't write Lore's redemption arc because he can't see anything really wrong with Lore because he can't see anything wrong with himself. He is, in every sense possible, his own undoing. He is the ultimate blocker.

Who knows, maybe one day he'll have an emotional breakthrough. He'll learn the power of apology and the ability to accept and love yourself flaws and all, and he'll finally finish animus.

The downside is he'll likely articulate it like a hormonal middle schooler that's terrified of real emotional vulnerability. At least that's what I've always read stuff like his as. Between statements like this, and complaints about first grade writing, that characters don't act believably but because that's how Mald thinks they should, his writing is just shallow. Like any other narc, he's very much about appearances. Bigger code? More impressive, even when it falls apart under scrutiny. Colorful, archetypical furry characters that fight you on a whim? Deep, loveable, and meaningful, just like Undertale without the build up! The mental health, even the grinding minigames (how artistic!) show that, not only won't he really reflect on his experiences, he really wants to vent while pretending he's not.

While that applies to a lot of these "artistic" vent games, it's apparent with Lore because he wanders into these situations. When things happen because of him, there's often not enough connection or build up. Even then, there's more emphasis on his family life, how his mom's a bitch and his internship sucked. Mald uses "bad thoughts" to push the idea of choices, but ultimately things happen to him while he's looking for his dog. Lore never goes up, he just "goes sideways." That's how Mald sees himself. Nothing's ever his fault, he ran out of mana. Even his voice is all about appearances. It's about looking impressive without putting the work into being it. Mald never really got out of QA, or social engineering, because he never stopped to think about what's really happening under the hood, and that's what's coming back to haunt him. SKG, and WoW, was just the start.

The common thread here is that he's just a really, really shallow person, only he got into game dev instead of more stereotypical shallow person things. He's still an idiot, but he's one of those idiots.

What's more likely is they might have realized with half a month to go, it looked like it was already "done" causing a slowdown in gaining signatures or something. There's been so many panic attacks over that page it's kind of ridiculous. If Mald were deploying a botnet for hundreds of thousands of signatures it would have boosted countries that didn't require entering correct information to even submit a signature in the first place, which didn't happen.
