Actually had some old friends in a similar situation, American husband, Canadian wife, and basically he was allowed to stay in the country more or less as much as he wanted once he got the initial immigration filings done, but it took over five years to get permission to do any kind of work. He wasn't able to go back to America though, he had to stay in the country the entire time things were being processed. Not sure on the exact details.

He's probably just on a visitors visa right now though, those are good for up to six months.
