The Aztecs, like all Amerindian civilizations, were stuck in a permanent bronze age until Europeans encountered them, and were not even contemporaries of Genghis Khan or his immediate successors. The Mongols were absolute brutal by contemporary standards, and became moreso after most of them converted to Islam. They did chill out afterwards because the brutality was a terror tactic and not a religious ceremony, at least until a khanate inevitably broke apart and a new warlord had to repeat the process (see Timur killing something around 5% of the world's population without even setting foot in China). The Mongols might have been deadly, but not particularly brutal. They did not flay children alive like the Aztecs, and more or less chilled out after a territory was conquered.
