You define the API so that even if it isn't feasible to distribute your server code users can re-create fan servers at EoL without having to go through the rigamarole of reverse-engineering everything.

I am very confused by this exchange. Does Jason think that an API exposes core game logic? Does he think API = distributed authority? Does he think jack wants to make critical game internals client accessible? Nobody suggested to expose server logic to clients that's the entire point of a "communication bridge". (Which is a massive simplification btw)

There is also this address you forgot about which he is currently residing at. As far as I know this is where he moved to some time mid last year and has been living there ever since running his ferret rescue out of there. The Lawrence St address is unironically where some of his jannies live and they pay rent to him.

This was really a throwback. I really did forget how Sterling was going through bullshit lawsuits from angry devs at the time and had a show that was gaining popularity with people. Just that side of his history went away from my mind when the trans and wrestling stuff became prominent and show moved away from reviewing greenlight/slop games on Steam.


Really missed his ruthless critical reviews with some research from back then.

Not once ever and in fact he is only doing this because he loves some of them even. He has said it would be a crime against gaming if we were to lose the ability to play something like The Secret World, a live service game.
 
As someone who makes API's for a living, I take offense at his minimization of their utility.

As has been said prior, all of the complication he poses from a technical perspective has absolutely been solved. A game made with any modern tech stack would be pretty easy to turn over to people. The real headache is licensing and middleware, but even that is navigable.

I truly believe his anger comes from the fact that SKG threatened his position as the gaming godking. He probably had an entire ad campaign, that same tired purple and gold heart with some slogan as well. And then Ross ruined it all (in his eyes)!

I remember when these videos convinced me that JIM FUCKING STERLING, SON was a cool dude and actually funny. Nowadays I don't know if anyone thinks those things. The Digital Homicide saga is still gold though.

Was that an actual job or just a figurehead? I'll assume that a small video game developer isn't necessarily ran like a traditional enterprise and even assume Maldy's background is totally legitimate and he absolutely excelled wherever he went, but he was never in the career pipeline for a Director of Strategy position. Hell, he was never particularly close to earning the Director title if it were a legitimate business.
There's not a spec of his work history that has jackshit to do with strategy either.

FFS, according to his LinkedIn, the most senior position he had prior was either as an engineer or specialist. Aka, not management. To provide an analogy of sorts, on paper his work history is akin to shift supervisor (not even manager LOL) at McDonald's and the Director of Strategy is the dude looking at which areas to expand to, research new menu items, how to renovate stores for increased growth, etc.

One of 4 things happened:

- It was a figurehead position and he's bringing bad attention.

- He was awful and this was the time to cut bait since the company wouldn't deal with spergs yelling at them for firing Maldy.

- A mix of the first 2, but the spotlight on Mald highlighted he's full of bullshit AND the entire industry hates him now. Again, providing the best opportunity they'll ever have to cut losses.

- Whatever bullshit story he's rolling with.

Again, I know next to nothing about that company or the video game industry so it may be standard practice to hire someone like him for that role, but it wouldn't make sense in any serious industry. UNLESS he was purely a figurehead which I assume was the case.
