It's the general "well I guess that's technically true even if no one talks about it that way" sort of thing that makes some people feel smart to say.

Like I can say the US was founded by terrorists too and it's technically true, but it just makes me sound like a clown to describe it that way and people would generally only do so to try and downplay the actions of Jihadists.

Sure, I guess? I mean the Irgun and Lehi were definitely terror organizations, but both of them combined were significantly smaller than the Haganah, and the ALA and Holy War Army were not exactly what you would call "not terrorists."

I think the vast majority of people that have an opinion on Israel are very ignorant of the founding of Israel, and by extension the First Arab-Israeli War.

It depends on personal definitions. To me the IRA are terrorists, not freedom fighters, who killed children and then same terrorists would form Sinn Fein and get elected to government, but the IRA are beloved in America. Insurgent, rebel, terrorist, etcetera, are all couched in how one judges and frames the actions of the people involved. Israel's paramilitary leaders would eventually go on to find positions in government, some serving as prime ministers.
