Something Josh said about first relationships on MATI got me thinking about Ian's situation.

I remember when I was a young tween just starting to have romantic interests, but still developing self-confidence, what it was like to get my first girlfriend. When you've managed to attract someone while in a state of under developed self-confidence you end up not entirely sure how you managed to attract them. This leaves you anxious about the relationship collapsing, like walking on thin ice.

Of course for a tween or young teen this is a fairly normal experience and an important stage of growing up. Once that relationship inevitably falls apart you start to learn that it's not as world ending as you thought it would be, and you can move on to the next relationship. You grow as a person, and so does your sense of who you want as a partner in life. Ultimately you might even realize that it's better to be alone than it is to settle for the wrong person.

Ian has never had this experience. He has never been forced to grow in this way. He was alone until Anisa entered his life and he ended up marrying her. Not only does he have an extremely limited frame of reference for what a relationship is like, he has also trapped himself in a perpetual state of anxiety such as I described earlier.

This is why Ian is so non-confrontational with Anisa. This is why he is willing to pretend to be happy to maintain the status quo rather than share his honest feelings. This is why he has become such a pathetic and broken example of a man.

Ian would be better off alone than with Anisa, but he lacks the experience and self-confidence needed to comprehend that fact.
