Cocaine acts on dopamine, it’s nothing like an SSRI which does act on serotonin. SSRIs aren’t psychoactive meaning there’s no high, if they work they gradually improve your mood after a few weeks, but they aren’t re-enforcing in that you don’t chase them like you do with cocaine, or heroin you won’t even notice you’re on them. Whereas cocaine smacks you in the face and makes you feel amazing at first like sex x10.

Drugs won’t completely change your personality they just make whatever your natural predisposition more extreme. If you’re a narcissist drug abuse will amplify that Nick always had these tendencies, but the coke has made him sloppy and go full mask off.

And yes recovery is not completing an outpatient court ordered rehab while you say you’re not at bad as the other people there, that’s classic addict denial. AA is 90 years old and we’ve learned so much about the science behind addiction, but they nailed step 1 you need to admit you have a problem, and work to rebuild your life without abusing drugs. Resetting your brain alone can take 2 years, and even then you’ll always be susceptible to addiction if you start using again. It’s similar to cancer that if you can make it to 5 years you’re out of the woods but you still have to stay away from substances.
