I don't buy the "saving trips to the Twin Cities" theory. That doesn't explain the scale, the stacks of cash, or the division into multiple smaller baggies. Cokeheads don't do that, coke dealers do. Nick has been out of law school for 20 years now and hasn’t practiced in 6 years or so right? Regardless I think whatever practical knowledge he had has flown out the window with only the basic rules and stuff from pop culture.

Like I think all legal procedurals and shows like Dexter had a plot device that this POS baddie gets to walk on a technicality. Cops didn’t read him his rights, the evidence was illegally obtained, etc.
I mean those things do happen and a good defense attorney does convince the judge that XYZ has to be thrown out.

For Nick though he’s not practicing law thankfully. He just gets to pretend that he’s successfully argued something out because he’s just playing armchair quarterback.

A lot of that came after the arrest. Not before.
If Kayla's family confronted Nick it would have been a sudden reaction not something planed out. Maybe they found some of his drugs in close proximity to kids. Or found him drunk driving and confronted him then and there.

People don't like to think about it, but quite often in small county situations the biggest drug hustlers in the market is the local sheriff and the state prosecutor. Those two can make a shit ton of money if they both go into business together. Even better, everyone knows not to say shit either because the two of them together can very easily wreck you in a way that is perfectly above board.

Not saying that is the case here, but in general this would be the most likely reason why a Sherriff and Prosecuting attorney suddenly cut a sweet heart deal with a major druggie and then sweep it up for him.

In my criminology class in college they called this the "CSI Effect". People have unrealistic expectations of police stuff due to Hollywood.
