I firmly believe that if Nick actually did the hard work, got clean and sober, he could fix his life and have a redemption arc that would win over the majority of people. Everyone loves a redemption arc.

But you could say the same thing about Bossman Jack and pretty any number of crackheads. It just almost never happens and clearly, Nick isn't remotely close to admitting he is out of control.

Andy Warski gave some pretty good insights into addiction when the topic comes up on the Kino Casino. One of the things he mentioned is how every addict has this phase where they think they can come up with a single good idea that'll turn their situation around.
