I think he rightfully surmises that his dwindling audience and balldowashers like Barnes are so fucking stupid that they just need a narrative to run defence with, they don't care about the factuality of it all. However this convinces literally no one else, it's just a struggle session.

On the face of it alone, if I didn't know Nick and I saw the lounge room picture and then the immaculate bathroom, I'd doubt the veracity of his account. No one, and especially not a family with five children, has just a single messy part of the house while everything else goes uncluttered. It just doesn't happen. With that many kids, you're either in control or not.
