Iirc Nick's decline had already begun when the Depp trial came around. We’re approaching the three year anniversary of the Johnny Depp trial verdict when Nick was at his apex.
If you could go back in time and show him how far down he would fall three years later he’d laugh at you and think you’re insane.
I came late to that trial because frankly idgaf about Depp or Heard, and only started watching it when reports of Heard's outrageous and downright looney personal behavior started turning up on the gossip sites. Since I watched Rekieta during the Rittenhouse trial, I picked Rekieta again.
The first thing I noticed was how he looked tired, crumpled, and hung over.
The second thing I noticed was that his guests contradicted and corrected nearly every legal analysis that Rekieta uttered, and how pissed off he looked when they did it.
The third thing I noticed was how many analogies he made relating to his own life, directing the subject away from Depp and Heard and back to himself, and how pissed off his guests look when he did this.
The final thing I noticed is how Law and Crime didn't talk over the testimony and reserved their comments for the breaks. This was particularly noticeable immediately after the DUI Guy or whoever it was got yeeted from the courtroom, since Rekieta and his panel would not shut the fuck up about it and talked incessantly over a good hour of testimony.
It was clear to me back then that Rekieta didn't have the legal knowledge he pretended to have, and his guests had better credentials. He already seemed bored with the whole thing (and that trial was much more entertaining than Read). Nick's narcissism was starting to show irl as well. He had already started his downward slide by the time Depp vs. Heard started, it just took the rest of us a while longer to notice it because the signs were subtle at first, particularly for those of us who didn't watch his night streams.
