Absolutely, there is a real and urgent need for much tougher punishments in these cases. The animal crush laws on the books were written for a time when isolated perverts would pay for one-off acts of cruelty, like a woman stepping on a kitten. They are completely outdated and fail to address the reality we face today: organized groups carrying out mass torture and slaughter of animals in the most horrific ways imaginable. By my own count, members of this network have killed at least 1,008 monkeys — and that’s only based on the videos that have been circulated.

I strongly urge anyone who feels the injustice of these light sentences to reach out to their congressman or equivalent government representative and explain the need for serious sentencing reforms. I'm currently working on a letter myself. This issue is nearly unknown outside of this website but we can change that.

Based on some quick googling, the laws for animal abuse may have a maximum sentence of 90 days, 1000$ fine, or both based on details. Looks like there was an effort to raise this to 5 years & 5000$ in 2022, but I think that failed to pass. Not 100% certain.

So assuming the max sentence is still 90 days (that's per instance) he was either found guilty of 6 instances of animal abuse and recieved the maximum sentence the judge is allowed to give, or found guilty of more instances at a reduced sentence.

If it was limited to 6 charges of abuse, or reduced sentences, it may be due to some technicality like not personally torturing the monkeys with his own hands or "trading but not producing" monkey snuff.

There have been some dog fighting cases in the past where feds were able to get favorable convictions by slapping on RICO charges. Usually these criminal networks are committing other crimes in conjunction with the animal abuse (like money laundering, drug trafficking etc) which carry heavier sentences than animal abuse, so prosecutors have to rely on those charges instead.

Also, Tennessee is the only state with an animal abuse registry. Some cities have them, but Tennessee is the only entire state that keeps one. Several laws like this have been introduced recently in various states I think. Everybody should be able to look up if they’re living next to a zoosadist psychopath imo.

I cannot understand for the life of me why punishment for animal cruelty of all things continues to remain so goddamn lenient, even in the present day, and even when you get people actually trying to make stricter punishments for it they get such push back on it to a point where stricter punishments don't pass. All of this EVEN when it's very well understood by now that these people usually want to or will eventually come to want to enact the same sort of cruelty on humans as well, with a high chance that they'll eventually end up going through with it.

By making animal cruelty charges super strict you're removing scum from society, saving the lives of countless other animals by making examples of the scum who do carry such cruelty out, and also saving the lives of humans who might also otherwise be killed by such scum. We shouldn't have to wait until AFTER humans are killed to set strict penalties for murder when it's clear that the likelihood they WILL move on to killing humans is much higher after animal abuse has taken place. Set strict penalties BEFORE people have been killed, not after. That's what saves lives.

The way things are set currently is all so fucking stupid, there is absolutely NO good reason why animal cruelty charges are typically nothing more than a slap on the wrist for all the damage that it causes.

Just WHAT is the reason for such utter bullshit?
