He didn't want NATO or one of its allies parking troops and missiles right on the doorstep, and the eastern regions have a bunch of ethnic Russians.

He thought it would be a quick weekend war, like Crimea in 2014 (which AFAIK was blatant Russian aggression to get a warm-water port).

I continue to be amazed how Vance went from certified anti-Trumper to a man absolutely loyal to the cause. Whatever Trump did to convince him was miraculous
