Experts have sounded the alarm about blockbuster weight loss drugs like Ozempic leaving users blind.

Several studies have linked the shots to conditions that cause inflammation and block blood flow to the eye, causing severe and sometimes permanent vision loss.

Now, researchers have detailed nine new reports of US patients who went blind after taking semaglutide or tirzepatide, the active ingredients in Ozempic and Mounjaro, respectively.

One woman injected one dose of semaglutide for her diabetes and woke up the next morning blind in her left eye.

This prompted her to stop the medication for two months before her diabetes forced her to go back on it. Two weeks after restarting, she lost vision in her right eye as well.

Another woman who had been taking semaglutide for a year woke up one morning with a 'painless shadow' over her left eye. Testing revealed blood vessels in her retina had become damaged, leading to blindness.

And one suffered bleeding in his left eye after taking tirzepatide for a year. However, doctors told him to keep taking the drug due to a lack of evidence linking his condition to weight loss shots.

The experts said while the exact cause is unclear, drugs like Ozempic rapidly lowering blood sugar levels could damage blood vessels in the eyes, leading to vision loss.

The researchers wrote in JAMA Ophthalmology last month that it's not clear exactly what could be causing the side effect.

It has been suggested that the weight loss drugs cause a sudden drop in blood sugar (because people stop eating junk food) potentially temporarily damaging blood vessels.

Last year, the American Academy of Ophthalmology issued a press release urging patients who have experienced vision loss while taking semaglutide to stop taking the drug and contact their doctor.

However, the academy did not recommend against taking the drugs altogether.

Health officials in Denmark, where Ozempic maker Novo Nordisk is based, is currently investigating the links between semaglutide and vision loss.

The new report detailed the cases of nine adults taking either semaglutide or tirzepatide.

The average patient age was 57, and the majority (56 percent) were women.

The patients were from Utah, Minnesota, New York, West Virginia, and Ohio.

The researchers found seven patients were diagnosed with nonarteritic ischemic anterior optic neuropathy (NAION), a condition where blood flow to the optic nerve gets blocked. The optic nerve helps transmit visual information from the eye's retina to the brain.

This leads to sudden vision loss in one or both eyes.

NAION occurs in about 6,000 Americans every year, and it's most common in patients with diabetes, high blood pressure, and sleep apnea, as these conditions can damage blood vessels.

One woman in her 50s developed NAION the day after her first semaglutide injection.

She woke up the morning after the injection with 'painful vision loss' in her left eye.

Tests revealed swelling in her optic nerve and damaged blood vessels in her retina.

The women stopped taking semaglutide and her insulin, and her vision had gone back to normal two months later.

Two weeks after restarting semaglutide to control her diabetes, the vision loss returned. She was diagnosed with severe optic nerve swelling, and her vision returned to normal seven months later.

It's unclear if she stopped semaglutide a second time.

A man in his 60s started experiencing painless blurred vision in his right eye 10 months after starting semaglutide for diabetes.

He had optic nerve swelling and flame hemorrhage, bleeding into his retina. Though his symptoms resolved within a few weeks, he lost vision in his left eye as well.

About 10 weeks after stopping semaglutide, vision in both eyes returned to normal.

One woman in her 30s suffered swollen optic nerves and hemorrhages in both eyes three months after starting semaglutide.

Most patients with NAION noticed their vision improving within days or weeks of stopping semaglutide.

One man, however, who developed hemorrhaging had vision improvements without stopping tirzepatide, so doctors advised him to stay on it.

The researchers said the results show associations between weight loss drugs and blindness, though they can't prove causation.

Roughly six percent of Americans - 15million - report using some form of weight loss shot.

Since their approval and mass circulation, patients have reported a number of unexpected side effects linked to the various weight loss drugs.

Black box warnings for the Ozempic include that it may increase the risk of developing thyroid tumors. The label also warns about the risk of developing stomach paralysis which can lead to nausea, vomiting and malnutrition.

Other individuals have reported developing problems with suicidal thoughts, sexual dysfunction and hair loss as a result of the drug.

It's bizarre how angry some people get about stuff like ozempic.

It just suppresses your appetite. That's it. Yet every story about it has people sperging out in the comments. I've had multiple friends who've had their lives changed because they finally ate normally and lost a fuckload of weight.

The funny thing is, the weight loss drug people? They look like fucking shit because due to zero resistance training, they got all this “gaunt skin flap” shit look.

Even the cheating resulted in poor image.

I can't laugh too hard given Ozempic has users who actually need it for things like Diabetes control, who are basically caught in the crossfire of this all.

Reminder that the reason for the "explosion" in cases of type 2 diabetes is that they changed the criteria for diagnosing type 2 diabetes in 1998, based on WHO recommendations. That's when the "prediabetes" category was created, allowing doctors and pharmaceutical companies to make millions of dollars prescribing metformin and ozempic to otherwise healthy people who just needed to lose some weight.

Ozempic wasn't originally a weight loss drug and it should've never been prescribed as such, not that it was a good medication in the first place.
Wouldn't be the first medicine that ends up being used for something else. Viagra is the most known example.

Why would she do this to herself? There was nothing wrong with her face or body.

The only thing people are angry about is that it's an obvious devil's bargain. It's like watching someone trade their soul to a cackling, horned man in a suit. No, you moron! That is very obviously Satan, and your soul is quite important! Perhaps you should have thought this through a little more! No matter what you were promised, it's simply a bad trade.

And the fact that they're doing this because the alternative - eating a bit less - is presented as some herculean task just makes it that much more infuriating. People are given the choice between one less Big Gulp a week and becoming Faust and they choose the latter. It's a level of short-sightedness that activates something primal in me. And not in a good way.

Having a large appetite is a lame excuse to be honest. If you have such appetite that you don't feel satiated, you have a medical problem that needs to be treated or you have extreme anxiety or compulsive behavior that also needs to be treated. It's not normal to eat that much that you become overweight.

I think it's great that Ozempic is helping obese people to stop being obese because that means an imminent death before they hit 40, but whatever problem they might have that makes them eat more, it might still remain untreated and cause different issues. And once you treat that problem, then you will lose that weight.

This is similar to the troon problem. Many troons are autistic, have been abused, or have problems of body image. Cutting off parts of their body is not gonna help. It might help them to feel momentary better, but things won't get solved.

just stop eating too much sweets and literally walk 30 mins and maybe do 15 push-ups a day instead of injecting chemicals, lmaoooooo

that shit doesn't leave you blind and anyone even gamer NEETs can do that

Would've been much easier if maybe for their birthdays you gifted them a padlock for their fridge so they stopped shoving food down their throats.

Oh well, you're still in luck, I know that for the next ones coming up you can buy them some walking canes.

Took your advice now my dog is dead because a junkie shanked him and I threw out my back on push up number 2. Worst advice ever.

So the theory is people take Ozempic and stop eating sugary crap leading to a blood sugar drop and thereby vision damage, meaning the damage is in no way caused by Ozempic itself? If you're such a glutton that deviating from your crap diet causes you to go blind, maybe it's your fault.

I get what you're trying to say, but these new injections clearly have some fucked up catch 22 where if you have issues with blood sugar (such as diabetics AKA fat asses) then eating practically nothing all of the sudden fucks your body up good. I don't know how anyone like that could treat their diabetes and weight issues with anything other than insulin and proper eating habits. I mean, it used to just be a diabetic medication, and now it's not anymore, and now we're seeing it explode in popularity and therefore seeing this show up particularly in diabetics?

I don't really get. How was this shit allowed on the market if the one job it was designed to do, it fucks up badly? (INB4 greed and corruption)

🎶Oh Oh Oh Ozempic.🎶
That shit became an ear worm particularly from how cringe it was.

Eat like a Menthos an hour or something then, there is no way this is not two extremes causing this damage due to people having extremely limited knowledge about nutrition.

Just a reminder to all the people looking to dunk on fat people:
Ozempic was developed as a diabetic medication.

Ozempic wasn't originally a weight loss drug and it should've never been prescribed as such, not that it was a good medication in the first place.
Yeah, people don't seem to realize that Ozempic is a diabetes medication and it's appetite suppression is just a side-effect.

A lot of doctors prescribing it for weight loss don't seem to be taking that into consideration.

It's suppressing your appetite by directly fucking with your blood sugar. That's dangerous at best and there is no long-term data about what that will do to your body's natural ability to regulated blood sugar.

If you're trying this workout advice in the US, you're supposed to take your guns with you to shoot approaching junkies. You should know that, this is basic stuff.

And it's probably a good idea to give your dog one too, so he can cover you while reloading.
