I find the back pain and surgery issue interesting. While you can injure your back, it’s really a marvel of engineering and resilient (unlike knees and shoulders). There’s a strong association with back pain and underlying psychological distress, stress or mental illness, esp among men.

A high achieving, physically disciplined, successful young man wouldn’t be comfortable reporting sudden psychological problems, which he would associate with weakness and defect. He may not even recognize he’s having issues. He starts hyper-focusing on a back injury or pain as the cause of all his problems. A otherwise healthy person repeatedly complaining of chronic back pain should probably have a psychological referral.

If you have good insurance, ironically I bet he did, and keep complaining to doctors about back pain they will eventually do all kinds of unnecessary and gruesome surgeries to you. The type of surgeries that will fuck up a healthy back. The munchie thread is a lesson in how far complaining to doctors can get you).

Given his background, affluence and intelligence he would be able to mask any deeper psychological issues for a long time.

The above will be his defense. They will say he was experiencing psychosis, BP1 or schizophrenia which drove his actions. How cooperative he will be with this strategy is the question. The public supporting him certainly makes it more difficult for his family, or defense attorney, to convince him he’s mentally ill and not righteous in his actions.

This vaguely reminds me of the play/film “The Ruling Class.” Society must see him as crazy because how can a man who benefits from every conceivable advantage western capitalism could bestow upon him, turn viciously against it.

My friend's dad had back surgery and a long recovery time. He ended up with more pain. Same thing for carpal tunnel surgery another friend's mother underwent. The efficacy rate for these is bad.

Tech guys have a tendency to be potheads, and marijuana can precipitate schizophrenic symptoms in some people.

Also, being highly educated doesn't necessarily go with discipline. A lot of book-smart people can't stay out of their own way. It looks like he was bouncing around a little bit after grad school, working for more than one company and living in a co-living space (long term hostel, basically) in Hawaii. This wasn't a guy who had his act totally together. He wasn't living on his own or with a single roommate, no one has mentioned a girlfriend (or boyfriend) that I've seen.

I think he's probably not street-smart and may not relate to most people very well. And I don't think he did well with women with those crazy eyebrows.
