I might be revealing that I'm actually retarded and didn't know it, but I always assumed sod was saying sod (dirt with grass growing it type sod). Calling someone "lowly dirt" makes sense in the same way that a lot of Arabs associate shoes with being lowly/unclean/undesirable. IDK, it makes sense to me.
Looking at the way it's been used I think at least some of the uses of it were in fact meaning exactly that. The uses to mean sodomy specifically seem to have started in the early 19th Century.
