I don't think it takes all that much really. Sometimes it's just a matter of catching someone with the right emotions at the right time. A college student who's already primed to think 'conservatives bad' might hear Destiny sperg out about how Trump supporters deserve to die, and that emotion and energy resonates with the college kid and he's now hooked.

I'd say Sargon of Akkad did this before Destiny did, being in the right place to ride the 'SJW's bad' wave to build himself a nice little Youtube presence.
