EUGENE, Ore. – The assistant director of fraternity and sorority life at the University of Oregon has been placed on administrative leave in response to a video he posted on Instagram in which he made disparaging comments toward people who voted for Donald Trump.
In the video, Leonard Serrato said that his sadness is over and his anger has set in and then proudly describes himself as a petty person before unleashing a profanity-laden rant in which he suggests supporters of the president-elect should “jump off a ***** bridge.”
“And so I say this in the most disrespectful way possible,” Serrato said in the video. “I don't care if you are my family, I don't care if you are my friend, I don't care if we've been friends our entire lives, you can literally go **** yourself if you voted for Donald Trump, if you are so sad about your groceries being expensive, get a better ***** paying job. Do better in life, get a ***** education. Do something because you're ***** stupid, and I hope you go jump off a ***** bridge.”
The university is aware of the post and released a statement on Thursday afternoon that stated the statements are “not in alignment with our values or mission.” The university also said they appreciate the conflict between his statements, his role in the university, and its institutional values and, outside of putting Serrato on administrative leave, the university is taking a few other actions. An investigation has been opened into the matter and, after “counseling” with “the individual,” the university requested the post be taken down and confirmed that it had been.
The video gained a lot of attention online after it was posted to the “Libs of TikTok,” garnering a response from the president-elect’s son, Donald Trump, Jr., who said that it feels ironic that Serrato runs Greek life at the U of O and “probably could have never gotten into a fraternity… it’s disgusting, but not surprising, that an employee at a state university would speak this way about more than half of the country.”
Dwayne Yunker, a Republican representative in Oregon’s third House district, replied to Donald Trump, Jr.’s post, saying that he reached out to the U of O about this and demand that they inform everyone about the incident. Yunker made that demand “in order to prevent a possible social contagion public health crisis.” Yunker also promised that the incident will be brought up when the U of O requests their budget from the state legislature.
Chip Messenger, a U of O alum, also replied to the post and said that he’s going to pull a $100,000 gift from the university if Serrato is still affiliated with the U of O by the end of the month.
