Not all that shocking if you think about it. Lots of autists get a fixation on pop culture from being basically raised by their TVs, and they're some of the only ones who would take obscure pop culture cruft as seriously in real life as the angry critics do for the camera.

plus most of their senses of humor (if they have one) basically consist of "lolsorandom" and "topical pop culture reference for the hell of it"
 

I came across this today on youtube. Anyone remember that time NC stood around acting like a jackass to all the kids waiting in line for the final Harry Potter book? Keep in mind that this vid was posted in the very early EARLY years of NC when he hadn't achieved "mainstream" attention yet. The fact that he was so pissy towards something popular that he never grew up even THEN before the fame just shows what an arrogant prick he is.

Kids are excited and actually looking forward to reading? Must be time to run around mocking them like a douche. After all, THEY didn't grow up with the oh-so sacred Ninja Turtles or Transformers n junk.

The books may have some flaws and Rowling may pander to sjws but at least she's produced something of value to fictional culture that will probably continue to stick around for a while. The only thing Doug has produced is an online show with lame skits and overglorified speeches on why he's right and you're wrong.
 
This wouldn't bother me, again, if this didn't come from Doug, who throws a hissy fit whenever people criticize one of his favorite movies/shows (cause Doug doesn't read, lol). So he's allowed to criticize other's favorite media, but the moment you mouth off Frozen/Ninja Turtles/Brazil you're the devil? Whatever Doug.

I recall a video he made of movies he would not "review" with one of them being Matilda and his reason why was that every time he brought up, fans were vehemently against it and he was afraid of the backlash if he did "review" it.
 
I just remembered, for all of Strider's comments about how he wants sex shown in a Disney movie, knowing him, I'm pretty sure he'd flip the fuck over if you showed him an animated movie that actually showed sex. (Fritz the Cat anyone?) He'd bitch about how "vulgar" it is or something.

Strider's autism is just mind-boggling, really. I'd be willing to bet that if Disney did include more sex in their films, he'd still flip his shit even though he got what he wanted.

Not even adressing the fact he said he would never review it...

But then again, he gave a totally bullshit reason why he would "never" review it: that it was a TV special and not in theatres.
Hey, dumbass! You already reviewed a lot of TV-exclusive shit by then!

Considering some other videomakers get shit on them for "breaking" promises not to review/discuss certain topics... I have been very surprised how little criticism Doug got for that.

But his sincerity can be kinda put in question here. (after all, his "real as himself" persona is as much a character he plays as NC, in my opinion)

Doug is kinda on the same boat as Strider when it comes to sex. First he'll be weirded out and consider it "Inappropriate" for kids, but then he'll end up gushing about it (why he likes Ruby and Sapphire from Steven Universe so much).

Honestly, I agree with you.

I mean, it's fine to enjoy a good Disney movie or two as an adult, but when you start over analyzing it (like the countless "'Let it Go' is an allegory for being queer!" thinkpieces) and/or believe it changed your life in some meaningful way? Yeah, I think they might need a little psychiatric help.

Besides, Disney's Little Mermaid is atrocious, especially since it defeats the point and moral of the first story, much less undermines the possible historical context for why Hans Christian Andersen wrote it in the first place (about his unrequited love towards another man). Anyone who obsesses over that movie needs serious help.

In all seriousness, I'm not entirely fond of the film either. It's way too toned down and makes it obvious that it was the last traditionally-made Disney film animation wise.

Maybe it's just biased nostalgia, but I see it as a classic escapist fairy tale that you shouldn't take too seriously because it's... a romantic fairy tale. For me, it's about the atmosphere, emotions and music...

Speaking of, anyone saw the 1975 anime movie?
Disney's version took quite a lot of ideas from it (the Mermaid exploring old sunken ships, playing with a pipe, escaping a shark, finding a statue of the Prince that makes her fall in love with him, saving the real Prince from drowning in a thunderstorm...)... and yet it manages to stay faithful to the original Andersen tale.

Reminds me how Nostalgia Chick/Lindsay Ellis used the clichéd excuse of "Ariel turned human and gave all away for a guy!"... almost as bad as "Belle has Stockholm Syndrome!!"
