prediction: if this should get made, it will be a mediocre film, not really good or bad, but both sides will praise/condenm the movie for a week or two and then it will be forgotten.

I wonder who could be behind this...

Look, it's either her or you at this point, Sony.

The funniest thing would be if Amy Schumer secretly diets for the role and then portrays Barbie as a skinny woman.

Then feminists and anti tumblr people wouldn't know what to think.

Eh. These kind of cash grab films have existed since the 80s. And I can't even muster up enough fucks over the fact that Amy Schumer is playing Barbie. Alright, cool, I guess? Although watching the chimpouts should be funny.
Unsurprisingly, the guy whining about FUCKING WHITE MALES is a white male himself.

Of fucking course he is.

It gets much better than that

Amy Pascal has won a bidding war for the rights to Zoe Quinn's acclaimed memoir CRASH OVERRIDE: How to Save the Internet from Itself.

Quinn is the independent video game developer who was targeted online when a blog post by her ex-boyfriend went viral, sparking the widely-discussed Gamergate controversy. Quinn fought back, thus starting a conversation about the violent sexism in the gaming industry.

The memoir sold to Touchstone/Simon and Schuster, and will be released on Sept. 15, 2016.

Rebecca Angelo and Lauren Schuker Blum, who met while working as journalists at the Wall Street Journal, are set to adapt to book for the screen.

Pascal will finance and produce the film under her Pascal Pictures banner, which is based at Sony Entertainment, with Entertainment 360 (Game of Thrones, Steve Jobs).

I'm a bit puzzled by the discussion around this to be honest. Does it really matter if they make a feminist barbie movie? From the OP it seems like a bunch of people are criticizing this choice, but like... why? Why do people care about what a barbie movie does? There's not even the ghostbusters excuse of "I liked the first one, so I don't want them to mess with this franchise." I have a hard time believing anyone who'd get angry about this is invested in Barbie as a cinematic franchise.

Some of the wackier folks out there probably think this movie will actually turn people into Tumblrinas as a part of some EVIL LEFT CONSPIRACY.

...Or something; hell if I know. Try not to think about this too much and just laugh at the idiots on both sides.

What's the controversy? It's just Sony choosing to lose money because Sony is the equivalent of a Downs syndrome child so rock stupid its parents need to electrocute it with a cattle prod to stop it from eating detergent.

It's probably less about the movie and more about the people defending it. You can say this whole thing is just an excuse for people to rage against women, but it's also, by extension, an excuse for people to rage against (white) men. Either way, people will get mad. It won't take long for the media to purposely escalate things further - the more people fight, the more clickbait they can shit out.

I'm waiting for the tie in Body-positive Barbie with fat rolls and wonky boobs. Oh wait, it's Barbie so they'll get a plus sized Barbie that's STILL an unattainable ideal standard of beauty somehow.

Welp.. This is the exact same tactic they used to get people talking about Ghostbusters, drumming up controversy to hide the fact Sony pictures can't make a good movie to save their lives.
