Who knows things about gibs? It's always surprising to me how many people are on SSI, SDI, whatever when we don't have true UBI in the US. Somehow there are people with completely free housing and EBT, but how do they get it? If navigating the system really is extremely difficult, then how did they navigate it? Is someone doing all the paperwork for them?

Thanks for reminding me about the plethora of scam financial products. Dividends are important especially as you become concerned about withdrawals, but the dividend yield chasers have to be the dumbest retards on the planet.

For whatever reason there's people that chase funds or companies with giant dividends. They don't seem to realize that a company or strategy giving a 40% yield cannot sustain that yield and the underlying value will plummet and you will lose money quite quickly lol.

There's a ton of garbage high yield companies that get added to the DOW, but my favorite example are the YieldMax *tm products. They like to do covered calls for that yield MAX, which over the long term ultimately limits you upside and does nothing for your downside. The TSLY and NVDY funds are great examples of this where the strategy severely under performs the underlying even when you account for those YieldMax divvies.

Yup, once you realize that a fucking HUGE portion of the shit available on "wall street" is products designed to be sold, you know they're out to fleece the sheep.

Poor / mentally ill people can get hooked up with case workers that will set them up with everything. Usually if the person is drug addicted and has to do government mandated rehab, the rehab facility will hook them up with a case worker.

How do the poor people find the case workers?
The drug addicts thing makes sense. Someone gets picked up being a menace, goes to prison or rehab, gets one there, but I've never seen wild case workers wandering around rural areas or the inner city.
 
This is kind of the inverse of the topic...

An older, likely on the spectrum, man used to frequent the same watering hole as I did. We got along fine, but I don't drink much, and he seemed to enjoy getting drunk on cheap domestic beer all day. He was a cornerstone at the bar. He was there every single time I visited, or he had just left. Sporadically over several years I saw his clothes deteriorate, his beard grew ragged, and eventually, after retiring in 2018 or 19, he started to stink.

I asked another regular what his deal was, and apparent he did financial work for a big hospital for 30ish years and saved Every. Single. Dime. He rented a cheap house in the hood for the last 20 years, drank cheap beer, didn't have internet or cable, and as he got older, he stopped buying amenities like new clothes. Between his 401k, personal investments, and savings, it was believed he had between 1 to 3 million dollars.

Later I came to find that during covid, he found out he could get beer delivered to his door, and proceed to drink himself to death in about a year. Supposedly, he left everything to his brother... Damn shame too. He wasn't a fool or a bad guy, he just took joy in alcohol and watching the numbers go up.

Well in my small red state city there is a "crisis center". They give people a place to crash for a night in an emergency or allow them to come down from whatever they're high on and get a meal in their belly. They direct people to resources available but generally it's a bus ticket to the capitol where there is a bonafide homeless shelter. It's the only interface with resources I'm aware of other than the police really.

For disability you essentially have to convince the government you're too fucked up to support yourself working, naturally a lot of people want in so there are lawyers that specialize in getting people on the dole. Once accepted You're well below the poverty line and qualify for more gibs, some of which are reserved for the disabled.
 
A friend's parents decided to rent out their old house when they moved out because they bought it at such a good price that the rent they would get would pay off their mortgage and then some. Being first time landlords, they failed to do basic shit like background and credit checks and what would you know, their first tenant was a nightmare. They were a regular nigger cattle family where they could barely pay rent, but whenever you pulled up to collect rent, you would always see something shiny and new at their place. I've heard stories of a new flat screen TV (back in the day when they were new and expensive), golf sets, ATVs, etc). My friend would tell me how they would always be late on rent payments and would always have some kind of excuse/sob story. They would say things like "oh you live in such a nice house while we can barely put food on the table". Cue eyeroll.

That's part of what I'm wondering about. I see people (online and irl) who seem to have the work ethic and mental capacity of a koala, but they're somehow able to navigate the social system to get free food and housing?

Oh my goodness the number of people who think being a landlord is RENT > Mortgage can go die in a subprime loan fire. I cannot wait, cannot wait at ALL for the damn appreciation bubble to slow down (doesn't even need to burst) and I'll be affected negatively, but I'll at least get to watch all these idiots eat shit as they get more and more desperate for rents lol.,

But the fucking programs all have these requirements to obtain, but they also will say things like "if you get X, you immediately qualify for Y, Z, etc" so suddenly because I get an ACA subsidy, I also get summer food stamps?

They're cut from the same fabric as people who buy a house and plan out their budget based on the mortgage payment alone, excluding home maintenance, repair, insurance, and taxes. Sadly, until they financially implode, they keep thrusting the housing prices higher with reckless overvaluation of assets.
