One benefit of disabling somebody's brain with an icepick is they don't have enough brain left to turn being lobotomized into an subculture identity.

A comparison I bring about all the time with people I talk to. And the thing is, I certain lobotomies were as far less accepted by people as we might think. Really think about the logic someone needs to follow. Does splitting your brain apart, the most important part of the body that makes up who you are, really help with mental issues? I'm sure many came to the conclusion that it would only exacerbate issues further, despite with the "experts" and the "science" says. I see your point but it's not as clear cut as it seems. The theory underpinning lobotomy involved excessive brain stimulation, which they tried to interrupt by mangling parts of the brain. The thing is, in an admittedly simplistic framing, the theory underpinning various forms of epilepsy is very similar to that. Cutting the corpus callosum is a legitimate treatment for some kinds of epilepsy. I know in reality the two treatments are completely unrelated, but to a layman, you can't really just apply "common sense" all the time.

And this is the case with lots of medicine. We're at the level of futuristic medical technology that you can't just use your common sense and say "well that sounds stupid".

Like consider how batshit chemotherapy would sound to a layman from 1870.

We unfortunately do need to rely on our medical experts to display good ethical behavior and stick to accurate medical science, and not be ideological faggots.

All my rambling aside, I do agree that it's good for the common man to be scientifically literate and try to educate themselves on modern science. (unfortunately though, our pop science publications like Scientific American are pozzed as fuck)
