I'd forgotten about how puppeteers reproduce. Only fictional species I could think of offhand that has three sexes - male, female, incubator - are the Soft Ones from The Gods Themselves. They're a truly inventive creation, wish he'd spent more time on them. (The three sexes fuse into one Hard One after they successfully reproduce. It's a neat concept)
