This could be a tactical divorce for the purpose of protecting one of the spouses (probably Ariana) and kids. My financial advisor says he’s done this for clients when a family business is collapsing — it allows for transfer of sole ownership to the other spouse and/or divides assets so the wife and kids will qualify for Medicaid in lieu of proper healthcare coverage they can no longer afford.

Either way it’s fucking hilarious.
 
I know for a while there was the forum conventional wisdom that the Vickers made a lot of money and Ralph should be scared but a coin store in rural California wasn’t going to turn over a lot of profit.

I began to suspect Vickers may not be a good business person when he told people on his steam that 100% of revenue from merch sales would go to charity. I know it may just seem like making a big deal out of a typo or mistake; but people tend to make mistakes in the periphery of their understanding. For him to confuse revenue and profit told me this guy couldn’t operate a business

The debt of almost $400k is what takes my breath away. I wouldn’t get a wink of sleep if I was in that position. I guess all the focus on Gunt was to distract him from the absolute trashfire his life was. Many such cases!

I'm inclined to agree given the timing of the Vickers' Chapter 13 filings, which precede their involvement in da Sektur. From what I read in the Schedules and subsequent filings, Vickers seems to have adopted a "spend a lot, borrow when I can, and pay none of it back" in addition to "never pay taxes or my HOA fees" lifestyle. Even though Ariana generated no income, Vickers according to his filings was netting low $100K pre-tax through the coin shop. There's no real reason why a $253,000 mortgage balance should kill them but for irresponsible spending and failing to pay the tax man.

This is good in theory, and I'm not saying that couldn't be the case, but Rocklin Coin Shop is just Matt Vickers' doing business as name. Everything related to that business is personally owed by Matt and he doesn't have an LLC or holding company holding those assets. Further, most of their liabilities don't stem from their business, but are jointly held (examples: mortgage for the house, federal income tax, property taxes, homeowner's association fees, Matt's stupid time share at Disneyland, etc.) This is why they filed Bankruptcy jointly back in 2018. To the extent that they're trying to discharge the debt by splitting, they're fucked.

For what it's worth, Matt appears to be proceeding pro se and Ariana hired an attorney.

This however may be the idea if the divorce is just a paper one. Get some state benefits that Matt's income would otherwise prevent them from having.

That crossed my mind too but the source says “counseling recommended.” Of course that could be an obligatory first step in any divorce regardless of reason

Wait a second, clock me if someone alreadty mentioned this, but wasn't the new coin shop going to be run / managed by Ethan and not Matt? This is starting to sound like one of those mattress store scams where the owner divests with debt, sells off inventory to someone related to the owner for pennies on the dollar, and the new owner opens a new mattress store with the same inventory under a new name / business license
 
I will go as far to say if Ralph doesn't pop a champagne bottle in honor of Vickers failure he has absconded from the big league
 
It appears all of this was happening while Vickers was feuding with various alogs on X and was under heavy criticism for his Fatrick lawsuit. Even Fatrick’s lawsuit didn’t result in his wife leaving him.
