I guess I'm a blessed weirdo. If I'm straining to hear, pushing the limits of my hearing, I can perceive symptoms of tinnitus. I can kind of "turn it off" and make myself not notice. It's like the "you are now breathing manually" prompts. I can read it, laugh, and send it to the shadow realm in my mind, and I'm back to breathing automatically without further effort.

Recently I had an ear infection and my ear was swollen shut for weeks and I could hear nothing but my tinnitus amplified and echoed, it was genuinely torture

Had it since kindergarten. Having hyper(realistic) sensitive hearing is both a blessing and a curse. Did you know people with this type of hearing are at a higher risk of going deaf? You could just wake up one day deaf.

I have white noise on at all times for sanity reasons.

What happened? Did you go to the gym with headphones at full volume?
It's a stupid habbit I have when I'm either at my last set of an important exercice or trying for new weight, I'll raise it slightly over the max healthy volume, and because all the blood leaves the brain I then forget for like 10 minutes to lower it back.

Repeat for all these years and it'll do some damage.

Yeah but it's mild enough that I don't notice until I think about it, like breathing or blinking.

Years of diligent earpro as a gigging musician undone by one bad day at the range.
