Yep, I guessed that was the reason. Nowadays it's as much a troon thing as New Vegas or the shark.

There was some discourse on /g/ a few days ago about whether the YouTuber LaurieWired was a woman or a "woman". He passes better than most, but it's not at all ambiguous when you see him wearing a choker. The retrocomputing and anime avatar were a bit of a giveaway too.

When you click on the page, it just says "yes." in a big font and links to some extremely manipulatively worded articles about how every hardship and bout of depression you have been feeling is dysphoria, no it is not just a kink or an obesession you were really meant to be a woman.

They had a resurgence with alt women and teenage girls like five years ago, which is when troons glommed onto them. Real girls stopped like a year later, even the terminally unfashionable ones.
