It has been happening since the early 00's. Facebook for example has ghost profiles used solely for tracking activities of people who do not have an account. Profiling is done by a lot of factors, user agent screen resolution, OS version and even battery charge level. With enough variables you can track with single user precision without "violating" privacy laws because you process no PII.

I'm aware they do things like that, but in my experience, they must be incredibly careful with what they do with the information. I've never observed an example of them, say, recommending that I add someone's profile as a friend who I only stalked with a dummy profile in another browser.

That's my main concern, being doxed. I don't really care about my data being exploited to sell ads or whatever the usual consumer "advocates" complain about.

I do generally try to be careful and stick to web archives, but I'm only human and sometimes leak data.

The big tech companies are all full of spies. The Twitter Files exposed a bunch of active and former FBI and CIA in that company, and those were just the spies with intel work on their LinkedIn. The Saudis infiltrated Twitter and doxed a bunch of dissidents:

Which is all to say that there are rogue actors in these companies on top of whatever bullshit they pull officially.

Its impressive and unnerving the damage something like a Kabar or a hunting knife can do. Anyone who has even dressed a deer after hunting will be under no illusions just how easily a knife can leave some truly nasty injuries to a live person.
