The accuracy of a statistic depends on how and where the data is gathered.But I'm starting to doubt this 0.52%
For instance, is it the entire world population, just the U.S. population, or a specific demographic such as 18-24 year-old middle-class white Americans? Each one will give vastly different statistics, yet all can be factually correct in their context. This variability leads to selective use of statistics to support specific agendas. HOw many time have you heard 'statistics show X' from both sides of an argument?
This also extends to academic research and peer-reviewed papers. In current year, statistics and study findings are treated like the gospel. You can safely dismiss most them when used in an ideological context and anyone demanding a study to back up your claim can fuck off.
