The voice talent is there
No it’s not. My entire point is that it does not exist.

Including it in an existing game with no other changes would make the game worse. The bing bing wahoos are sound design rather than voice acting.

The game being for five year olds was a shot at you and your poor reading comprehension.

At best, competent voice acting is window dressing. Competent voice acting is not something that exists today, after having been overtaken by anime voice acting. The inclusion of voice acting makes a game worse by its very inclusion.

HOMIE JUST DOESN'T LIKE VOICE ACTING
Okay, pulling back the curtain of spergery for a moment: voice acting has its place, and there are many games that have good voice acting. I’ve really reduced and exaggerated my argument sperging because this sped isn’t getting it. However, games like Pokémon or Mario or Zelda are done a disservice with voice acting, as evidenced by the Switch Zelda games.

Game Freak really needs to focus more on what’s important to a video game: making a fun video game, and voice acting is a very low priority towards that.

Respectfully disagree because I have played at least 3 games with voice acting that I considered to be very good, two of which have been released after 2020 if I recall correctly
That said, all these games were extremely story- and dialogue-heavy and not RPGs

If you don't mind me asking, why did you buy the game but didn't open it? Also, should probably sell it while the physical game nostalgia bubble still exists.
At the time I just never got around to it. Life started getting busier, and I was buying them out of habit. By the time I had the time to play it, the desire to do so (combined with Sun being rather lackluster) meant I had moved on to something else.

I know someone in this thread was talking about doing a Crystal ROM Hack off of the disassembly available online. I started messing around with that shortly after Dexit became a thing, and it’s enough to scratch my Pokémon itch for now.

Also, I’m waiting for the physical media bubble to pop so I can get back o buying physical copies of old games. I have zero interest in reselling.

I've used your own argument to prove you wrong: You say "competent voice acting is a window dressing", and then you claim the game is for 5 year olds. Why shouldn't a game from the largest media franchise in the world have a little window dressing, is that a bad thing?
Children don't care about "quality" in either case, and any serious RPG of this kind has voice acting to some degree in it, so it is bizzare that Pokemon doesn't have SOME kind of voice acting, even if it isn't any better than your typical jrpg/anime fare. There is no excuse a game in 2023 of this caliber shouldn't have any voice acting on a home console with this amount of dialogue, and your argument comes down to "nuh-uh, I like it this way! it's impossible to find good voice acting in a game like this because they are all doody heads!", which is ironic since you started insulting me for taking apart your laughable argument. I'm not going to bother going thru all the games released from 1996 to today that have competent voice acting to prove my point, I will once again direct you to Witcher 3, another open RPG filled to the brim with quality voice acting that is also on the Switch. Now compare how much a small polish IP like this makes compared to the behemoth that is Pokemon as a franchise, if CDPR can afford good VA then there is no excuse for Nintendo/Gamefreak, especially since Nintendo ALREADY HAS VOICE ACTORS THAT WORK ON POKEMON CHARACTERS.
You're a moron and your argument is non-existent. Just take your L and stop derailing the thread. This is the kind of shit people use as bait on /vp/ and yet you're trying to argue for it unironically. Once again, you sound like another one of those sheltered retards that never played a single video game outside of Pokemon, so you're finding it baffling that people are demanding some sort of quality control for what it de-facto number one media franchise in the world. Star Wars is second, do you know how many good quality games that franchise had, even before Pokemon came out? Do I even need to start going over all the ones with voice acting in them? Never mind, let's take two: The KOTOR games are both RPGs, how baffling would it be if neither game had no voice acting and only text boxes? You think people wouldn't complain about that?
These double standards don't apply to Gamefreak, as much as their ball lickers would like that to be the case. They need to start making competent games if they want people to stop complaining bout them, simple as. Glad even you admitted they're not capable of that, but that doesn't mean I will start lowering my standards to match theirs(and yours)

Why would anyone trust Game Freak with something like voice acting when they can barely put out a game that remotely functions on launch? They'd just half-ass it like they do with most other things.

NPCs in this thread aside, I'm almost done playing Pokemon Black for the first time. That's one of the gens I missed between gen 4 and PLA. I see why people praise the plot so much. It is definitely a high water mark for Pokemon stories (whatever that means to you; I'm personally easy to please with game stories as long as the game is fun.)

The climax is fantastic and Pokemon games should give you the option to use the box legendary in the final boss more often. That is one thing I think SV almost did right though that was pretty much just a scripted event.

The game design is simply on another level, too. Every gym has a decent leveling spot with its own heal spot nearby. That's the kind of quality of life I need from turn-based RPGs like this. After playing a lot of Violet recently, I was also very happy to see Cheren using Leftovers, and that was just the obvious held item. I really don't know why Game Freak decided to have zero fun making trainer battles in their quest for endless babyification.

What do you fellas think the odds on a Black/White 3 in the next couple of years are? Would you like to give Game Freak a chance or do you simply dread the idea?

There wouldn't be a stupid argument about voice-acting in the mainline Pokémon games had Game Freak not given them animated lip flaps to simulate speaking. Such a fucking dumb design, especially when the text is already fully spelled out and the mouths just keep on moving.

In comparison to the original Japanese, does it match up better because syllables, or is it still the same?

That is me. I temporarily stopped (and appropiately changed my avatar) because I am waiting until The Indigo Disk drops, which should reveal all of the Gen IX mon before I ge to hacking.
Besides, I did almost all of the foundational work that does not actually involve porting Paldea or the assembly language. I still wish I knew how I would code the Terrastalisation phenomenon.

I dropped off with Z-moves: so it just changes the type of the Pokémon, and for most Pokémon it’s one of the types it already had? Of, they did to Z-moves what Z-moves did to mega evolution.
The nice thing is that the Pokémon files have a good deal of unused data. It would probably involve code from how transform works, but I don’t know enough of how the mechanic works to say for sure.
I, myself, was going to try and implement abilities, though not the same way gen 3 on does so. I need to finish what I’ve already started adding before I start on that, though.

Small indie team, please understand. You're giving GF a lot more credit than they deserve if you think there is any lip synching, it's just standard anime gum flapping.
To close the book on that topic(since I am right), I am playing thru Grand Colosseum right now and I am having a blast. It's been years since I played last time, but the ROMhack made it fresh again with higher difficulty and QoL changes/gameplay updates from future gens. Better yet, I was able to get the save working with Trigger's PC and get a whole bunch of pokemon I had sitting around battle-ready so I can play around with them in double battles.
This is getting close to my dream Pokemon game, Colosseum was already good but this is even better. ROMhacks are definitely the way of the future.

Black/White 3? Not a chance. A remake of the first games? Probably in the next generation. There might be a Legends game that reveals the original Kyurem (and it's gonna be ugly as all hell if it happens).
Unova is my favorite region but I won't be buying any remakes. I no longer trust Game Freak not to fuck it up, especially after the Diamond and Pearl remasters.
Forget that last part, I forgot the DP remasters were made by the Pokemon Home team, not GF. Thanks, @Replacement Account

That and they made Piers literally SING in his cutscene with absolutely zero audio, making GF look cheap and terrible. (Which is what I think started this whole VA debate)

Yeah, it absolutely is. I don't want to give Gamefreak any slack when every other major developer (and pass by me with the 'small indie dev' argument; they are developing for the largest media franchise worldwide) has done more voice acting than one person spelling out one word on the goddamned DS. Zelda and Metroid have more voice acting than Pokemon.

Besides, compare these:

and

and tell me we weren't absolutely robbed. I know the latter is fanwork, but that gym leader is literally a singer.

At least Goodbye Volcano High had the musician MC actually perform songs. Gamefreak is a fucking disgrace.

Voice acting in video games has always been not great at best, but there is a place for it. That place has never been RPG’s.
Someone never played Final Fantasy X. RPGs are the best genre for voice acting because of how much text there is, I'd never have been as into Skyrim if not for the voice acting.
