I’m raising my newborn vegan — it’s not as simple as you think

You may not know her name but reality TV star Lucy Watson is making waves across social media.

The former Made in Chelsea star and her husband, James Dunmore, shared their excitement about expecting their first child.

But what truly made headlines was Lucy’s revelation during a Q&A session with her followers: she’s planning to raise her baby as a vegan.

The TV personality also revealed that she has been grilled by her followers over links between her fertility struggles and veganism.

“I’ve had many people along this journey tell me you need to give up the vegan diet, it’s stopping you getting pregnant. That is not the case. There are people who are crack addicts and get pregnant, being vegan is not going to stop you,” she wrote.

A lamb to the slaughter

The 32-year-old’s journey into veganism began long before the baby bump came into the picture. Her deep-seated commitment to a plant-based lifestyle stemmed from a childhood memory where she witnessed a lamb being slaughtered on her family farm, an experience that reshaped her dietary choices forever.

Since then, she’s championed the cause of animal welfare and plant-based living, and her passion led to the creation of two bestselling cookbooks catering to plant-based diets.

As Lucy embarks on motherhood, she’s determined to instil the values she holds dear into her child’s upbringing. For her, veganism isn’t merely a dietary choice; it’s a promise to the animals and a commitment to a compassionate way of life.

Raising children vegan

The decision to raise a child as a vegan sparks curiosity and debate.

As a diet, veganism abstains from all animal products, including meat, dairy, and eggs, and relies heavily on plant-based foods like fruits, vegetables, grains, and legumes.

Advocates argue that a well-balanced vegan diet can provide all the essential nutrients for a child’s healthy growth, including protein, calcium, and vitamins.

It can also teach children about empathy for animals and sustainable living.

It’s not so simple

However, like any dietary choice, there are considerations to keep in mind.

A vegan diet may require careful planning to ensure that children receive adequate nutrients, such as vitamin B12, iron, and omega-3 fatty acids, typically found in animal-derived foods.

Parents raising vegan children must pay special attention to nutrition and may need to supplement their diets accordingly.

Will plant-based parenting be the next big thing?

Lucy’s decision to raise her baby as a vegan shines a spotlight on the broader conversation around plant-based parenting.

It underscores the importance of informed choices, balanced nutrition, and a commitment to values that resonate with each family.

While the vegan diet offers numerous potential benefits, it’s crucial for parents to educate themselves and consult with healthcare professionals to ensure their child’s well-being.

In the end, Watson’s choice to raise her child as a vegan isn’t just about food; it’s about instilling a love for animals, the environment, and a compassionate way of life.

Her journey inspires a new generation of parents who wish to raise their children with both a love for plant-based living and an awareness of the world around them.

you need to give up the vegan diet, it’s stopping you getting pregnant. That is not the case. There are people who are crack addicts and get pregnant,
Science, ladies and gentlemen.

I'd mald about the child abuse, but 1) this is all probably a lie; and 2) the kid has a 100% chance of being a cunty societal burden regardless of their diet, just based on who their parents are. So fuck it, I hope she kills it or it anheroes in its teens, either way, an enemy dies (if it exists in the first place, which I'm putting at a 40% chance.)

Surely there aren't any side effects that come with being malnourished with soy from birth... Then again, even if mommy chose to breastfeed, all that kid is gonna get these days is micro-plastic milk.

Lastly, you cunts, plants are living things too... and unlike meat eaters who eat the Carbon-Dioxide-exhaling animals (CO2 being deadly to us) - YOU faggots spend all day eating the innocent plants which give out Oxygen (what we need to Breathe).

Who is the true evil? You Goo Gobblers.

This woman probably views humans as a species of animals.
Therefore, I hope she doesn't breastfeed her child, to avoid feeding it dairy.

I know a couple of vegan mothers that have their heads screwed on straight. They won't eat it themselves but they believe their children should be served dairy, cheese, eggs and at least seafood at home. What the kids choose to eat outside of the home(daycare, school, friends house) is entirely up to them. If the kid wants a hotdog at the amusement park they can have a hotdog. Their personal straight veganism doesn't apply to their children. I like those women.

Are vegan babies allowed to breastfeed?
Wondering this myself… absolute madness.
I was blessed with a very nice health worker for my first when I was first time mum and clueless and we talked about weaning. I asked what to start with. She said ‘meat - make up some spag bol, beef mince, mince veg into into it, cook it well and they love it.’
They did and still do. Breast milk is wonderful stuff but at about six months on average (from four if they’re grabbing food off you) babies also need to start with the real food. At six months their iron needs alone cannot be met by breast milk. Breast milk is a vital part of the diet but gradually reduces in proportion past six months h til they’re in real food. Meat is vital. It’s nutrient dense. I dont see how a child could even eat sufficient calories on a vegan diet never mind get the obligate nutrients like b12, choline etc.
Raising a newborn or any child as vegan is straight up child abuse.
It can also teach children about empathy for animals and sustainable living.
Children learn that anyway even if they eat meat, this is not exclusive to vegans. Keep a pet, visit a farm or a zoo even and see how the animals are cared for. Discuss how important it is to look after them and treat them humanely. Note the different diets they need. Discuss that too. Take the dog for a walk, brush the cat to keep its fur healthy. Discuss how we need to eat animals and this we need very high standards for food production. Feed the birds - and when the cat gets one discuss how food webs work.
Circle of life and all that.

This. My kid went from breastmilk to brisket and blueberries. Like basically the best diet you can have.

Wasn't there a vegan couple that raised their baby vegan and it died from malnutrition?

If that were true that only vegan children can have empathy for animals then the whole world would be and always have been a future serial killers' playground. Oh that's not the case and she's just a moral busybody circlejerking to her ideology? Say it isn't so.

While the vegan diet offers numerous potential benefits,
Name one that his health related. I'm honestly not even sure I buy the environmental claims, but let's keep it to health.

Sorry, this kind of stuff makes me angry. Somebody in my life has Type I diabetes and Celiac Disease. As best I can figure, a vegan diet for him would be a death sentence. Like a lot of Type I diabetics, he has a lot of trouble controlling his sugar. A diet high in fruit would fuck him up good.

They did and still do. Breast milk is wonderful stuff but at about six months on average (from four if they’re grabbing food off you) babies also need to start with the real food.

The other thing infants need is tons of fat in their diet, which is energy dense.

Vegan diets are low-fat by nature and the fats they do allow are more suspect.

RIP, kid.

Here's a better article, written by 99.9999% of parents:

Knew a woman that was raising her kid on a vegan diet. The poor kid's skin was grey and looked like a corpse. When the kid was about 4 the veganism stopped, mostly because mommy-dearest nearly killed her daughter and she had to take classes if she didn't want to lose the kid (she divorced her husband and accused him of being an abusive drug addict in order to get primary custody, dude is still fighting for the right to see his kid).
