It's astounding. With Pat's writing, I don't get any sense of character depth or voice. With this, I can hear distinct voices in my head. Hell, Pelax sounds almost like the angel from Good Omens, it's the last line that does it. Even a quick and dirty rewrite gets this better than Pat does.

Has anyone else here worked in behavioral health? I had only a brief stint but I saw some shit there. I'm talking one patient had just been released from prison after he shot his wife to death. He was schizophrenic and legit thought she was a demon. Another one tried to jump his car over a moving train because he saw it on a TV show. Then there's the more run of the mill type stuff like people swallowing hundreds of pills then getting sent to the ER (actually rather common occurrence), folks having psychotic breaks and ending up naked in some business, BPD people just being fucking awful and getting dropped off at an ER because nobody knows what else to do with them, new moms with post-partum depression so bad they nearly kill themselves and their newborns, etc.

Yeah, it's an absurdist joke that could work in a light-hearted satire of bureaucracy in a Douglas Adams kind of way, or a very dark satire of bureaucracy like Brazil or V for Vendetta. But Pat's book is neither, it's trying to be a heist story first and foremost, so jokes like that just break the suspension of disbelief. A universe where people are competent enough to pull off bank heists, and banks are competent enough to defend their wealth well enough that a clever heist is necessary to steal from them, has no place for the level of incompetence required to have someone get formally renamed to "Firstname Lastname" because of a bureaucratic screw-up.

i haven't, but i am familiar with an expert on the matter, especially in narcissistic personality disorder. if you need some background noise, then this old fart, Professor Sam Vaknin, has a lot to say about the brain, about human behavior, about the state of current day relationships and, aside from all that, much more to pontificate on when it comes to social media and the deleterious effect it has on the human psyche.

I'm pretty sure her name is Raven for real, but I think the Mama part is just a meme for no reason. Raven worked at Patrick's school as like a counselor or a school nurse or something. This has lead people to believe she was a helicopter mom who constantly gunt guarded her behaviorally retarded ODD child.
