At least 31 people have died and 20 others have been left in a serious condition after allegedly drinking tainted liquor sold without authorisation in eastern India.

Key points:

  • Some protesters want the ban to be scrapped and monetary compensation for victims
  • Three people are being questioned for allegedly selling spiked alcohol in the area
  • Illicit liquor has become a hugely profitable industry across India
The victims belonged to three villages in Saran district of Bihar state where the manufacturing, sale and consumption of liquor has been prohibited.

The deaths were reported in a district government-run hospital where the sick were brought by their families for treatment, said hospital chief Dr SD Sinha.

Sale and consumption of liquor were prohibited in Bihar state in 2016 after women's groups campaigned against poor workers splurging their meagre incomes on drinking.

Police officer Santosh Kumar said several of the 20 hospitalised have lost their eyesight.

Several opposition parties, including the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party, have held protests outside the state legislature building to demand the region's liquor ban be scrapped.

They also called for monetary compensation to be provided to the bereaved families.

Sushil Modi, the state BJP leader, said more than 1,000 people have died after drinking tainted liquor since the ban was imposed six years ago. The BJP is in opposition in the state.

Nitish Kumar, the state's top elected official belonging to the socialist party Janata Dal, rejected their demands and said the ban on the sale of liquor was "not my personal wish but a response to the cries of the women of the state".

Three people have been detained for questioning for allegedly selling spiked alcohol in the area, he said.

Saran district is nearly 60 kilometres north of Patna, the Bihar state capital.

Deaths from illegally brewed alcohol are common in India, where illicit liquor is cheap and often spiked with chemicals such as pesticides to increase potency.

Illicit liquor has also become a hugely profitable industry across India, where bootleggers pay no taxes and sell enormous quantities of their product to the poor at a cheap rate.

At least 28 people died and 60 others became ill from drinking tainted liquor in the western Indian state of Gujarat earlier this year.

Gujarat is another Indian state where the manufacturing, sale and consumption of liquor are prohibited.

In 2020, at least 120 people died after drinking tainted liquor in India's northern Punjab state.

Idiots probably ran a still and didn't realise you need to only save the "heart" of the distillate. Really common noob error.

The article mentions that it's common for illicit Indian alcohol to be spiked with chemicals to make it more potent. I suspect it's probably not made in the most sanitary of conditions either. Then there's the issue @Stabmaster Arson II raised about producers not removing methanol from the distilled product due to lack of knowledge.

Imagine not having a gut microbiome strong enough to digest lead. They died because they were WEAK. Only the chosen can consume the divine nectar that is moonshine.

Eh, some people get violent, rapey and retarded when they're drunk. If people didn't do these things, it'd be a lot better. But booze brings out the worst in a lot of people.
A bobs and vagene drunk is even worse.

Unfortunately I have seen rational, highly reputable people drink themselves silly and then decide to get on their cars and maybe cause horrible or deadly injury to innocent bystanders, so while that problem persists, there will always be teetotallers and dry law campaigners. The general base is that all people cannot be trusted to handle their alcohol.

Weird, the ban came about the exact same way prohibition did in the USA.

Women who depended on husband's paycheck got sick of waiting on payday for husband to come home with desperately needed money. As the hours ticked by they realized not only was hubby drinking away the paycheck but they and the kids were probably going to catch a nasty beating for good measure once he did get home drunk and broke. Early prohibition rallies were successful thanks to the army of abused and poverty stricken women, children, widows and orphans who would speak about how their family was destroyed by dad drinking demon rum.

I have some sympathy for the problem, but the solution isn't banning legal booze. Now they don't have blind drunk husbands, but just blind... or dead ones. You'd think maybe the solution was the status of women and forcing them to be dependent and subjugated to their shitty drunken husbands. The change in the status of women in the west solved much of the problem.

Were these arranged/forced marriages? Or couldn't the women had have simply chosen to not marry a drunk? Seems like if women just had basic decision making skills this would never have been an issue, just marry a different guy instead of the drunk. Easy peasy lemon squeezy.

Women in India are put into marriages by their parents and pay dowries to husband's family. Marriages are mostly arranged in India by family with very little input by the woman/wife, or even husband in some cases. If a family is poor this is esp dicey and can mean they marry off daughters to very nasty characters because they can't afford a dowery for a "good husband."

They can be, and are, legally beaten by husbands. It's a huge problem there and women have very little say in who they marry, but this is esp true for poor/ low status women. For poor women marriage is more like indentured servitude than what we think of as traditional marriage.

Wives being burned alive because the full dowry wasn't paid up to the shitbag husband, or his family, is an actual social problem there.

Yeah but most Indians don't own cars so I say let them drink and if the whamen over there get uppity well that's what beatings were invented for
