Pretty much that. He had absolutely no real legal foundation to demand the information he was demanding and in a rare example of legal incompetence, not even his lolyers could magic up some bullshit for it. He was literally demanding things he had no remotely justifiable reason to demand.

He probably had a malpractice case against his lolyers who didn't tell him this.

The specific reason for the damages award was simply that he lost a discovery dispute, though. That's just automatic. If his lawyers didn't tell him that was the inevitable result of losing a discovery dispute he couldn't possibly have won, they were incompetent.

Then they started posting articles with male feminist shit sprinkled in. At first it could be ignored, but then they published an article "written" by Zoe Quinn and I knew it was over.

I checked out this article to see what was written. Typical cracked, leaving out a shit-load of facts. It went straight from Norm MacDonald to swatting. No mention of childing people, rape threats, bullshit subpoenas, or bigger bullshit lawsuits. Years ago they wrote a similar article about how shit gamers were and mentioned the Alison Rapp incident. They never mentioned her by name, instead saying how gamers "dug into her personal life and got her fired from nintendo." Of course they never mentioned that what was found included an essay on how child porn should be legal and her being a literal whore. Never change, cracked. Don't you ever let the CHUDs convince you to let facts ruin a good story.
