A would-be robber pretending to be a stranded motorist killed a Florida college student who had pulled his own weapon in self-defense during a gunfight in Alabama, authorities said.

Adam Simjee, 22, and his girlfriend, Mikayla Paulus — both students at the University of Central Florida — were driving through Talladega National Forest near Cheaha State Park when they were flagged down Sunday by suspect Yasmine Hider, the Clay County Sheriff's Office said in a statement.

Hider said her car had broken down and when the victims offered their help, she "produced a gun and made the couple walk back into the woods," according to the sheriff.

Simjee then pulled his concealed handgun and wounded Hider "multiple times" before he too was shot and then died at the scene, the sheriff said.

Paulus, who was not wounded in the shootout, called 911 and told authorities there was another woman with Hider. Searchers eventually found the suspects' camp about a half-mile away, where they had been "living off the grid," according to the sheriff's statement.

That's where police officers and deputies found second suspect Krystal Diane Pinkins and her young child.

"As officers were ordering the female to the ground a 5-year-old child ran from the woods holding a loaded shotgun," the sheriff said. "Law enforcement told the child to put the shotgun down however the child continued to the female’s location before laying the gun on the ground."

Pinkins, 36, remained in custody Friday, booked on suspicion of endangering the welfare of a child, murder, two counts of kidnapping and two counts of robbery, jail records showed.

Hider was taken to a hospital in Birmingham and will eventually be jailed on suspicion of murder, two counts of kidnapping and two counts of robbery, the sheriff said.

Clay County District Court Judge David Law on Wednesday issued a gag order, preventing both law enforcement and defense lawyers from commenting on the case.

His order also directed Clay County Sheriff Jim Studdard to scrub from social media any statements his office had previously made about the case.

Simjee was a finance major at UCF where he had been enrolled since last fall, a school representative said Friday. Paulus was about to embark on her first semester at UCF, pursuing her master’s degree in counselor education

I'm curious what the deceased was carrying... Sounds like he landed multiple hits before being shot and killed himself, and then the assailant was able to walk a half-mile through the woods back to her camp, where she presumably stayed without receiving medical care for however long it took the police to arrive on scene and track her down, and was still conscious upon their arrival, to the extent she had to be physically restrained.

I really hope this dude didn't get wasted because he was carrying some POS Jennings .25.

Imagine seeing that on the side of the road and being like "you know what, I think today's a good day to exercise the benefit of the doubt".
The first rule of surviving a gunfight is don't put yourself in a situation where you're likely to get into a gunfight. I'm not saying the guy had it coming, but I will say that the collective threat assessment ability of the human race improved that day.

Honestly, most people with CCW do not train enough.

Going even once a month to the range and shooting from an aiming stance is not really good training just some fun an target practice. Ideally, it should be from holster but not many ranges allow that. A compromise is from the side with the pistol pointed at the target. You bring the gun to eye level, get a good grip on it with your other hand, aim, and fire.

If their so someone else at the shooting bays it's even better. Close your eyes, wait for their gun shot, then when you hear it, your goal is to get your rounds of on target before the other shooter fires their second shot.

Most critically, it that a gun or even a vest does not make you immune or John Wick. Personally, one should avoid stopping. If they block the road you want to stop at least 10 yards away from them so that you have room to manuver.

White guy misses his shots. Black girl hits hers.

Is it just black guys who have shit aim? Should they make their women do drive bys instead?

I'm pretty sure the difference is when the gangbanger shoots at someone it's to send a message and maybe, MAYBE kill the bitch that fucking crossed him, while when a psychobitch that pretends to be a stranded motorist to kill and steal shit off people shoots it's always to kill.

Man, I would really like to know the real reason why this judge thought the gag order was necessary.

CLAY CO., Ala. (WBRC) - A Clay County judge issued a gag order in the case of a Florida man killed in a shooting and attempted robbery on August 14, 2022.

According to court records the State of Alabama filed a Motion To Prohibit Participants From Commenting On Or Releasing Information About The Case To The Press. Judge David F. Law approved the motion saying, “After hearing argument from the State, this Court finds that there is a substantial probability of material prejudice to the Defendant’s ability to receive a fair trial, should the parties be free to discuss without limits the case in a setting where media coverage is likely and there are not any reasonable alternatives.

Authorities say the shooting happened on National Forest Service Road near Cheaha State Park.

The Clay County Sheriff says the victim is 22-year-old Adam Simjee from Apopka, Florida.

20-year-old Mikayla Paulus and her boyfriend, Simjee, were taking one last summer vacation before they started back at University in Florida. While near Cheaha State Park, they pulled over to help what they thought was a woman in need.

“They love traveling together,” Heather Lambert, Paulus’s mom, said. “They were going to go to the waterfall, so they were driving and this girl flagged them down and said she needed help with her car, so they stopped.”

Lambert said her daughter and Simjee tried to help the woman for more than 30 minutes and when they couldn’t fix the car, deputies said the woman attempted to rob them.

“She told them to put up their hands and give her the keys and their cell phones and they did,” Lambert said.

Lambert said Simjee brought protection, a gun of his own, to help keep them safe while traveling.

“She [the suspect] had them at gun point the whole time, then she put the gun down some, and that is when he pulled out his gun and told him to drop hers,” Lambert said. “Then, I guess she shot him and he shot her back a couple times.”

Lambert says she is thankful Simjee had a gun and protected her daughter.

“I don’t know how Mikayla didn’t get shot in all of that, but she had taken off her shirt to stop the bleeding, and she called 911 and was giving him chest compressions,” Lambert said. “She thinks he was alive for at least 20 minutes, but it took them at least 30 minuets to get there. I don’t know what would have happened if he didn’t have the gun on him.”

Adam died in the woods and when officers arrived, Clay County Sheriff’s Department said they found another suspect, Krystal Pinkins, who had been watching the robbery and shooting.

Police then found multiple tents at a base camp in the forest. Lambert said the woman had mentioned living in the woods before the robbery.

“They told them they were trying to live off the grid,” she said. “They were trying to live out in the woods.”

Lambert said she’s thankful her daughter is home safe and that Simjee died a hero.

“There is no one like Adam,” she said “They completed each other, they really did.”

Actively involved in a police shootout before he's even finished kindergarten. I'm sure that kid will turn out to be a fine upstanding citizen.
