TOKYO -- Trademark registration of a widespread form of fanwork for the popular shooter video game series Touhou Project by a third-party YouTuber is causing an uproar, which has developed into a bomb threat against a party related to the matter.

According to the party concerned, YouTuber Yuzuha had registered the trademark of "Yukkuri Chabangeki." Yukkuris are adorable creatures made by the Touhou fanbase, usually consisting of disembodied heads of various characters of Touhou Project, created by ZUN through videogame developer Team Shanghai Alice. Many videos on YouTube, Niconico and other platforms use the creatures along with text-to-speech technology for narration, and "Yukkuri Chabangeki" refers to ones that include "chabangeki," or comedy.

On May 15, Yuzuha announced via Twitter they had acquired the trademark right and said, "In the future, if you want to use the trademark, you may need a license agreement." They initially explained in a YouTube video posted on the same day that people need to pay 100,000 yen (about $770) a year excluding tax to use the trademark, but tweeted on May 16, "From now on, users do not need to pay for a license agreement. However, the (trademark) rights remain with our company."

According to a YouTube video posted on the channel of Touhou Danmaku Kagura, a smartphone game officially recognized by Touhou Project, the creatures originate from an image created using ASCII text characters which was later turned into an illustration by a separate individual. As of Oct. 8, 2020, Danmaku Kagura staff had confirmed with the ASCII art creator, the illustrator and ZUN that anyone can freely use Yukkuris.

Due to such circumstances, many people posted criticism against Yuzuha such as, "Isn't what you're doing violating the (Touhou Project) fanwork guidelines?" After Yuzuha's announcement, the Kai Intellectual Property Law Office in the Chiba Prefecture city of Sakura, which applied for trademark registration on behalf of the YouTuber, was flooded with telephone calls and emails asking about the process of the application.

On the early morning of May 16, a bomb threat by a person claiming to be involved in the matter was apparently sent to a web portal in the area in which the law office is located. The message reportedly said, "Multiple bombs have been placed there. They will explode around 3 p.m." This led to the temporary suspension of services on the Yamaman Yukarigaoka Line and the community Koala Bus from around 2 p.m. on the same day.

The law office had received a request from Yuzuha in September 2021, and applied on their behalf. In response to the uproar, the law office on May 16 offered an apology on their website, saying, "We are sorry for the inconvenience caused by not knowing that the trademark is beloved by everyone."

The term "Yukkuri Chabangeki" was trending on Twitter at one point, with many Touhou fans using the hashtag "Yuzuha o Yurusuna" (Don't forgive Yuzuha). A petition demanding the abandonment of the trademark was launched soon after the YouTuber's announcement on Change.org, and had collected signatures from more than 39,000 people as of 5:30 p.m. on May 17.

Regarding the matter, ZUN on May 15 tweeted, "The subject of 'Yukkuri Chabangeki' caught my ears. I'll check it out with people familiar with the law."

Dwango Co. Senior Managing Director COO Shigetaka Kurita also posted a tweet as the representative of Niconico on May 16, reading, "I had a meeting with Dwango's legal department about 'Yukkuri Chabangeki.' To take all possible measures, I will also consult with a law firm. I will give the official view of Niconico by Saturday, May 21, so that people can use Niconico with peace of mind, so please wait until then."

Touhou is retarded and it's fans are proto-bronies, but they did do this:

For context, this would basically be the equivalent of Mark Furie actively telling people to make whatever content they want with his stuff, and then someone else buys up the Pepe trademark and charges a licensing fee to make memes with him. (They’ve at least backed off on the fee).

I don’t blame people for being pissed.

They even look kinda similar to Pepe. 2FF3E90B-3208-4BD5-9997-20AB818AA4DE.jpeg

I decided to never interact with the wider Touhou fandom ever again when I read the English Touhou wiki's article on these things.
I thought it was just a cute meme format and voice synthesizer based on the characters. What is this borderline fetish fodder doing on a wiki?

This is what happens when you don't have ironclad control of your works. Any asshole can trademark and copyright your shit.

Don't google "Yukkuri Abuse." Just don't.

I don't think the creator of Touhou even made the Yukkuri. Sure they're using his character's likenesses, but they are a derivative work of a series known for its derivative works. This is more a case of an out-of-touch greedy youtuber trying to monetize a meme. I don't know much about the copyright involved in this, but from what I the loose hold the ZUN uses with his creations is basically sacred and the reason the series became a subculture in of itself. No wonder the fans got violently upset.

In Touhou Project male characters are outnumbered by female characters by dozens to one. That doesn't leave a lot of possibilities for hetero relationships. Almost all of the girls have to be LGB: Lonely, Gay, or Bisexual.

That's just shipfags being shipfags and hentai artists wanting their masturbation material to have a semblance of plot. The canon works have absolutely no yuri, or even romance in general in them. While the fandom is often degenerate, the basis of that degeneracy has actually nothing really objectionable about it.

Personality-wise they can be as annoying as jissousekis. They also have various fillings and technically you can eat them. Some are filled with nasty stuff though. I think Nitori is full of motor oil.

This is literally some fucking current year fucker buying the rights to an ancient 2000s meme of funny looking characters' faces going "take it easy". These have been made of fucking every media character in existence long before the current decade and should as a result be completely fucking impossible to legally do this shit to. What's next?someone fucking claiming ownership of and flagging down all the 2000s caramelldansen or tricky the clown memes despite those being clearly originated by completely different people and having origins tied to other material they don't own? probably.

not even old memes are safe from coomers.

Yukkuri is very much still a thing in Japanese internet. There are a bunch of channels that use the voice synthesizer and imagery because a lot of Jap YouTubers are autists that hate using their voice and face.

I don't condone terrorism or bomb threats but

I'm pretty sure fluffy abuse came from Yukkuri abuse, or at least there was massive overlap.

It's still usedin general I've noticed in a manner similar to how pepe and wojak never really stopped being used by anyone even long after corporate/redditbrain fuckers that didn't understand the appeal proceeded to run them into the ground .
If a bomb threat is what it takes for internet people to "take back" an old meme from the media machine as fucked up as it is that's kinda funny.

I've avoided the fanbase myself as they're pretty progtarded, it's kind of what dissolved the fanbase it once had. Glad to see Zun shutting down their lesbian fantasies though. Covid-lockdowns seems to have dismantled many of the music circles as well or they're just suffering from burnout.

Secretly Zun is a fan of male-harem concepts.

Western fans try this shit all the time with touhou. It’s mostly trannies who think it’s magical girl shit and not Reimoo leading nigger cattle so that the Yokai can eat. Zun is incredibly laid back with copyright and a couple of years ago a shitty American made smash clone tried to get it from under him.

I’m curious to know if this YouTuber is a jap or just a Westerner trying to play legal bullshit for quick cash.
