The Columbus police officer who shot and killed 16-year-old Ma’Khia Bryant has been cleared of criminal wrongdoing, Ohio prosecutors said on Friday.

Bryant was killed in April 2021 by officer Nicholas Reardon as she swung a knife at a young woman, seconds after pushing another woman to the ground. Bryant was Black. Reardon is white.

Police were responding to a 911 call from Bryant’s foster home about a group of girls threatening to stab members of the household.

The killing led to a US justice department review of the police department in the Ohio capital.

Bryant was shot four times. The coroner listed the cause of death as a homicide – a medical determination used in cases where someone has died at someone else’s hand but not a legal finding. It does not imply criminal intent.

The killing further heightened tensions over police shootings of Black people, and also cast a light on the Ohio foster system.

Announcing the grand jury decision, special prosecutors Tim Merkle and Gary Shroyer said: “Under Ohio law the use of deadly force by a police officer is justified when there exists an immediate or imminent threat of death or serious bodily injury to the officer or another.”

They said the decision followed a full review of the shooting.

The woman Bryant was attacking, Shai-onta Craig, had lived at the home but returned and argued with her, according to Craig’s statement to police, which was released on Friday.

Reardon told investigators he didn’t think using mace or a “hands-on” approach would have worked because of the knife in Bryant’s hand, because he thought he was the only officer on scene and because Bryant appeared much bigger than him.

“At the time I fired my weapon, I was in fear for the life of the female in pink,” Reardon said, referring to Craig.

The city will conduct an internal review to determine whether Reardon followed department policy, the Columbus public safety department said.

Bryant’s family expressed disappointment and said: “There should have been other non-deadly options available to deal with this situation.” The family also called for “full-scale changes” to Ohio’s foster-care system.

“Ohio’s foster-care system is failing our children and we cannot stand by and allow this to continue,” they said. “As the one-year anniversary of Ma’Khia’s death approaches, her family is resolute in their fight for justice on her behalf.”

A foster parent, Angela Moore, told investigators neither Bryant nor her sister, also in the home, ever displayed violence, but all the girls periodically argued.

A week after Bryant’s death, the mayor of Columbus, Andrew Ginther, invited the US justice department to review the police department for possible “deficiencies and racial disparities”.

The US justice said its Office of Community Oriented Policing Services would conduct a review of what the department called technical assistance in such areas as training, recruitment including a focus on diversity and creating an early intervention system for officers.

Columbus – the 14th-largest US city – has seen several contested police shootings, including the 2021 killing of 27-year-old Miles Jackson in an emergency room and the 2020 shooting death of 47-year-old Andre Hill.

The police officer who fatally shot Hill has pleaded not guilty to charges brought by the state attorney general.

I feel bad for the cop. Nobody likes to know they had to kill a kid, criminal or not.

Someone here said before in another thread that what blacks call their culture is just growing up poor and in a bad neighbourhood surrounded by scum.
And being proud of it as opposed to trying to get the fuck out

If she'd managed to stab someone to death another family would be howling for blood and mass firings. You really, absolutely can not win anymore.
The woman she was going after sounded like a catty bitch, but still seemed like a more functional young adult than Bryant ever would have been. The cop made the right call.
Ma’kiah’s mother was a waste of skin who beat and neglected her children until they ended up in foster care, and the foster mother was trash too because the woman that Ma’Kiah tried to stab was the older ex foster daughter of her foster mother and the older foster daughter reportedly abused Ma’Kiah.

She shouldn’t have tried to stab that woman but it’s a sad situation all around.

Her family failed her, the foster system failed her, and the police were left to pick up the collateral damage.
The foster mother was warehousing kids for money, but some of her foster kids visited her after moving out, so it seems like she wasn't that bad, at least not as bad as Bryant's own kin. Bryant's father was present that day, egged on the fight, and only objected to any of it after his spawn got ventilated.

And all of it started because the older girls made fun of Bryant for having a messy bedroom.

Officer Reardon doesn’t seem to have responded to any calls since 2021, wonder if that will change now that he’s been cleared.

Columbus OH is severely unstaffed in police officers, they can’t afford to lose another one (charge is for random defendant) .

Is Columbus a nigger city?
That’s a hard question to answer personally but the answer would be yes.

There have been a lot of police involved shootings involving black people there and there was destruction in the downtown and clashes with police during the riots.

The mayor Andrew Ginther is on the defund-redistribute the police train so Columbus Police morale is extremely low, and crime is currently very high with a overwhelming amount of that crime being gun violence.

And of course you know who’s shooting who but it’s escalating there as a city.

Yep.

The Internet never forgets.

By going all in on BLM while ignoring all China related issues and losing a step in his sport, LeBron likely put the nail in the coffin of his legacy. He's going to be very wealthy for life, but he is legacy/image obsessed, so this will bother the shit out of him.

Between his cowardly public persona and hopping teams like a pussy any time he didn't get everything his way & just the right mix of teammates, he's always going to be known as a corporate mouthpiece and a soft player. Which is a shame, because his talent is god-tier and he was very likeable when he came into the league.

He was probably put on some form of desk duty.

Does anyone else get the impression this was a no-win scenario for the cop? He doesn't shoot, or tries for less-lethal options, hambeast shanks the other girl and he gets pilloried for not doing enough to 'stop violence'. He shoots her down, he gets pilloried for killing a black girl who dindu nuffin.

I think they want cops to just start walking away from altercations. 'Not my monkey, not my circus.' Especially with black-on-black violence where they know they'll get fucked regardless of what happens.

This is the one that made Twitter blue check marks poorly try to do damage control by claiming that everyone 10-14 engages in youthful knife fights every once in a while right?

Yes, unfortunately it was the one where people jumped to conclusions and didn’t analyze the footage the moment it was heard that it was a “White cop killing an African American.”

It was absolutely a no win situation.
He either had to stand by and watch someone get stabbed or shoot to immediately prevent a stabbing, he obviously chose the latter because that’s a police officers job.

In the city where this happened, the police is now so short staffed that rumors are circulating of police not being able to respond to non emergency calls because of the high amount of violence.

At least in Columbus they’re being unofficially told to walk away. They still report to all the shootings of course but certain areas are beyond hope and don’t welcome police despite the rampant crime.
Still have family and friends there so mixed feelings.

If only he'd just smiled and sold shoes....... like Jordan, his other fan indiscretions would have stayed just that. Before he went all SJW, did anyone except Miami Heat fans still hold a grudge on his six titles promise and then leaving town for even MORE money and media attention without delivering? Probably not.

Instead, he tried to one-up Jordan and become a fusion of him and MLK...... Space Jam II probably had no shot, but, him doing it after sucking off China and telling everyone suffering economic hardship due to Government mismanagement of Corona to see it or be branded racists? That made it weapons-grade cinema bomb material. And I wonder if he realizes or cares where it all went wrong?

You had ONE job.wav

Like fucking what? Bitch was literally mid fucking stab when the cop rolled up and was still a distance away, short of fucking magic what other options could he possibly have had?

Personal choice IS fucking magic to these people, when you never work hard at anything in your life, how other people succeeded and the physical actions they take to do so are a total mystery and the outcome is only attributable to the desire of the person who benefited: you know "Gibs me dat"?

This is the SAME kind of person who feels showing up to work on time every day is racist.

Here's a non-deadly option for you, how about you don't encourage your 16 year old to attack another person with a knife. How about that?
