Many states have restrictions on the maximum number of axles due to the loads they can carry, if I recall. Michigan is a state where such restrictions are either nonexistent or are much more lenient. In fact, the kinds of rigs you describe are sometimes referred to as "Michigan trains" or "Michigan road trains" but are sometimes just called "road trains."

The reason extra axles are a thing is because adding more makes it so you can haul more weight. Standard axle rating is 20k lbs for singles, 34k for tandems.

There are also a bunch of state rules for various different highways that restrict length and types of combinations or permit stuff that wouldn't be allowed in other places. "Turnpike Doubles" like you see on the NYS Thruway being different than "Rocky Mountain Doubles" another regional combo you see out west which are different than "STAA doubles" which are allowed pretty much everywhere.

But if you are doing long distance fleet operations across the interstate system and not just hauling a bunch of short quick trips on one of those "good roads" that allow fuckhuge road trains, you stick to the standard 5-axle setup because it's good pretty much everywhere then balance everything out so that you get as close to 80k GCVW while also not going over your axle weights. You do this by loading carefully and shifting your trailer axles/fifth wheel.

This is what amuses me greatly about all this too. These coddled city kids who are screaming at the class that basically provides them with all their comforts. I know that if everything went down tomorrow - talking total power/heat/water loss, I'm fine. But they sure the hell wouldn't be. Granted, not everyone can afford to live in the sticks, but considering how these shut-ins loathe anyone from a rural setting and treat us like "fat, dumb hillbillies", it just makes me smile that they really can't comprehend that they have nothing without the working class. Especially food.

Just look at the truckers themselves. These aren't reddit kids just deciding to put on their BLM TRANS pins and go to a downtown core with a sign and nothing more. They brought porter potties, fuel tanks, grills/ovens, etc. This is a "I'm staying, I'm bringing what I need to hunker down, I don't have to move". Y'know, shit adults would think about if you really mean to protest. Meanwhile these kids are having breakdowns at the sound of truck horns and are screaming at the working class to disappear because they have a bit of discomfort. Imagine the tweets coming out when they run out of food. I'm sure their true colours would shine while the working class would still not care since anyone with a brain prepares themselves for more than 2 days without food.

I'm sure those cat turds would look real tasty to an apartment-dwelling redditor who can't go outside anyway because no one's wearing a mask.
 
The thing I find most amazing is Trudeau's ineffectuality during this whole situation. He's had his way for the last 5 years and he's been able to do everything from change the anthem to protect troons unchallenged. Even at the beginning of this whole thing, when he was leaving borders open to "not be racist", while filling the country with Covid, no one blinked an eye.

Now that his authority is being challenged, where is he? Hiding. He crumbled at the first sign of a real crisis that requires leadership.
And of course, the mentally ill on reddit and twitter are blaming the police (who they've shit on for the past 5 years and demanded the defunding of) and Ford, because everything is his fault.

Trudeau is facing truckers in multiple provinces, the police and normal citizens finally reject his bullshit and his response as a leader of a country is to "Can't Even" and run away and hide.

What a useless fucking pussy.

His press conference he sounded perfectly fine. God is great and all but I don't think he's gonna bless us with Trudeau dropping dead. It would make this too easy.
