In Portland, they're purposely getting rid of car lanes and narrowing bridges to make driving less convenient, and then adding in bike lanes that basically no one uses even in the 100 or so days of the year when it's not raining. It's fantastically stupid.

Seattle took the lockdown as an opportunity to close a couple dozen streets in the northern part of the city to cars outside of local traffic. They weren't even the side streets people were using to bypass busy arterial roads or anything, they just wanted to see if they could get away with doing it.
And to my knowledge they're still closed, even after the city opened back up.

This actually happens, and conservatives don't want to do anything about it, so it's only going to keep happening.

I worked for a growing start-up for some years, owned and run by, who else, a group of right-leaning white guys. As we approached the 200 employee threshold, I warned them that "we hire the most qualified people, and we just haven't found any black women who meet our standards" wouldn't fly with the EEOC. Anyway, they have a Director of Diversity & Inclusion now.

That's horrifying. Is that enforced federally or is it at a state level? I.e. could a company in Florida just hire whoever they think is best qualified but a company in California is subject to it? And how did something as racist as this shit get passed into law?

Suddenly it becomes a legal quagmire because any sanctions would've to contest the very dogmas of current idpol being peddled by a number of NGOs and government bureaucrats.

That's a problem no judge would want to deal with.

There is a push to make cycling the default mode of transport when for many people that just isn't practical, and I say that as someone who rides a bike regularly.

It doesn't help that you get bicycle 'activists' like Critical Mass who think it's cool to screw up major roads in a city by biking in this huge pack of retards.

I swear, somewhere I saw rules regarding bicycling on roads. One of them was 'bike single file'. But invariably, the faggots will ride side by side, taking up more of the lane and making it harder to pass.

In a number of cities, cyclists cannot be ticketed for violating the rules. Consequently, they make a hazard for themselves and everyone else. They get themselves killed more often than others, and we're supposed to somehow give a shit. There are other cities that had cycling lanes decades before it became a fad, and most of those places will bring the hammer down on cyclists who blow stop signs, run red lights, or bike in packs off designated trails in the form of $200+ tickets.

The only way getting rid of cars makes sense is if women go back to spending most of their day getting groceries, preparing meals, and cleaning house, because you can't take kids anywhere on bikes. I guess it could also work if we have a childless society where cities are basically living graves, and the material needs of the population are taken care of by slave labor that's out of sight, out of mind.

It's federal and is a direct consequence of titles V and VII of the Civil Rights Act.

The fundamental issue is that the legal definition of discrimination has two really toxic parts. Somewhat paraphrasing:

1. Discrimination is anything a reasonable person of the discriminated class would consider discriminatory. This is a completely open-ended definition that ultimately comes down to what lawyers and judges think. They rely mainly on academic "experts," not any kind of polling or surveying, to determine how blacks and women think, and these "experts" come from university women's studies/African-American studies/other crit theory departments. There are no statutes, regulations, or standards defining this. Not only are the rulings capricious and arbitrary, but they aren't even consistent from court to court It's legal Calvinball, and the only way to be safe is to be hyper-vigilant in trying to adopt whatever the "experts" say is needed to not be a bigot this year.
   
   
2. Legally, disparate impact is prima facie evidence of discrimination, and the burden of proof shifts to the accused. In other words, if fewer than 14% of your employees are black, if fewer than 50% are women, if the black women have average salaries below the white males, etc, then the court assumes you are discriminating in your hiring & promotion practices, and unless you can prove otherwise, bend over and spread your cheeks for the DEI industry.

The Civil Rights Act is really popular with both liberals and conservatives, so none of that is going to change. Most people on the right are barely even aware this is how the law works, so they come up with retard-tier solutions like "just explain to the judge that we only hire qualified people" before being taken to the cleaners by civil rights lawyers.

To be slightly charitable, for the Burnside bridge replacement, the committee said it was a budgetary issue; they have to replace the bridge so that at least one is highly likely to survive the CSZ quake that's coming, but they don't have enough money for the replacement to have as many lanes. Given how shit the city's finances are, I can't say they're lying. I understand that the plan is to have the middle lanes be reversible based on traffic patterns. I don't think it's usually jam-packed anyway.

Now the Columbia River Crossing plans, that's just being exceptional. And for such a woke place, you'd think they'd notice the rapey symbolism of demanding to penetrate an unwilling body to expel their seeds within when it comes to the light rail inclusion.
