Chuck has been disappointing me a lot lately. And it *isn't* because he seems to like ST:LD (Side Note: when I was a kid, "LD" was an insult for Learning Disabled; it basically meant retarded. But that's neither here nor there. XD)

Way too much of Chuck's output lately has just been him reuploading his old material (which I've already seen.) That's all well and good, and a lot of times I'm happy to see that material again, but he has done that at the expense of making new stuff.

To some extent, it's fair that he's reuploading old things instead of making new ones... I know he's been fucked over by multiple platforms collapsing. And I am genuinely happy that he actually still has that old stuff to reupload. But he has barely made anything new for months now... And there's no real reason why he can't re-upload several old videos at a time.

I know he's previously said that there's a limit to how much he can upload at a time, but there's no way in hell that said limit is one new video every couple of days at more or less the exact same upload schedule he's always had, to the point where this month 7 out of his 12 scheduled releases this month are reuploads.

I've been watching DS9. Never seen it before. I think there's something wrong with me:

Major Kira, ehhh - nice figure.

Mirror Kira - so hot!

Cardassian Kira - so cute!

Regular Dax - Pretty.

Mirror rebel Dax - Smoking.

Are these mirror episodes just a chance for the cast to slut it up and have a good time? Or do I have just have a messed up attraction to the bad versions?

welcome to the just now watching DS9 club.
as for your question, yes, it is an excuse to slut it up. see this post for more proof.
I want mirror T'Pol for... reasons.

Hubba hubba hubba!

Also, DS9 has very well-written characters. You can tell that when you get exchanges like this and they work:
"You're investigating Quark?"
"I always investigate Quark".

Everyone who has watched it knows which two characters that not only was, but must be; and that the joke would only work with Quark.

Also, respect to DS9 for creating an entire niche for short actors (the Ferengi). I could do without the Grand Nagus's chronic over-acting, though.

it's the star trek version of halloween (and break up the "serious" parts while still be "cerebral" enough for star trek).

for the same reason pulling that overly into main canon is one of the reasons STD is such utter shit, followed by LOL POOP JOKES XD lower decks.

Yes basically. Its a chance for the cast and characters to fuck who they wouldn't fuck normally, and also be more edgy than they otherwise would be.

He's done like a re-upload every day for the last 2 or 3 weeks if you check both of his channels. Part of what's slowed him down is that it has to go to youtube which means he has to re-edit the video to get it around the censor bots.

And then when it fails, do it again. (Like his recent reviews of full metal Panic- he did like 4 episodes and now only 2 are viewable.)

Don't worry @Clown College , I got your First Contact reference.

Technically being an asexual jello, isn't that image also lesbianism? The real question is, how do you know when he's done?

Man... grading on a very VERY steep curve (of disc/pic), Lower Decks might be... the better current series??

Ok who switched out my alcohol?
"Better" than shit doesn't mean good. It's just a different, somewhat less repugnant flavor of shit. Like nibbling goat dung after gulping down rotten opossum turds. Yeah, it's not nearly as foul as what you were just eating, but it's hardly tasty or wholesome.

Edit: On a more positive note this meme made me laugh my ass off.

I'm not really sure why I've had this on my mind lately, but I kind of wanted to put my thoughts out there on the various fan series I've wasted a few hours of my life watching. Note that I don't watch every fan series out there, even I don't lack a life that badly, and also its been quite a few years since I last sat down and watched some of these (almost a decade in the case of New Voyages) and i don't feel like going back over it just for the sake of an opinion on a New Zealand shitpost farming website.

I had enough to say that I'm actually breaking up my post into two parts too, God help me. I didn't even realize until I started writing this how many series I've seen let alone the number that are out there.

Star Trek New Voyages PNG.png

Star Trek New Voyages/Phase II: This is probably the Star Trek fan series most people, even normies, actually know about and I’ll be upfront about it. I’ve never liked this series. Even as an impressionable kid when you think I’d be more open to fan shit I still didn’t like it. Its weirdly paced, weirdly produced, and just generally feels off compared to the thing its trying to ape, TOS.

The show’s priorities are also a mess. In general there’s a stronger focus on action and that action is way flashier than anything in regular Star Trek, even the newer stuff. The action in some episodes, like the Doomsday machine one, In Harms Way, is spastic, with ships flipping and rolling around and in general pulling stunts that wouldn’t look out of place in Discovery or the Abrams movies.

I enjoyed little things about it, such as the tape they got William Windom to record for the same episode, but overall the awkward acting and shitty plotlines just cause my attention to drag whenever I try to devote any amount of time to it. I do find it hilarious that the show’s creator and first Captain Kirk, James Cawley, was an Elvis impersonator and used that to fund the show. But once you get past the novelty of that he’s an awful Captain Kirk and most of the other actors aren’t much better. The show would have been better suited to just not having the main characters be Kirk and company.

I admire the effort that went into it, but I just can't recommend this to anyone unless you're really tolerant of fan shit.

Star Trek Continues PNG.png

Star Trek Continues: A lot of Trek fans were talking about this one because it had a ton of money and some star power behind it. The project was of course helmed by Vic Mignogna. Yes. That Vic Mignogna. Actually despite liking the original Fullmetal Alchemist I had no idea it was Vic behind this project until the first time I saw it. I also saw this series long before Weeb Wars ever broke so that hasn't colored my judgment of it, though it may do so to a new viewer.

The sets and production are great, the performances really vary from actor to actor, and Vic just doesn’t have the right voice to play Kirk even though he actually has the chad physique for it. I once described him in the lead role as “Captain Kirk Douglas” even though the resemblance is superficial. The show’s CGI is actually surprisingly poor in a lot of sections.

The writing is where this show really struggles. It’s a mess, and overall the episodes are too preachy and each one seems to have a very simple structure with an obvious message and some kind of moral its trying to teach the audience. Star Trek is no stranger to preachiness, but its rarely this formulaic. Especially in TOS, where the plot would develop organically and the moral would follow after that. The best episode is the Mirror Universe one, In Thy Image. The rest is hit or miss.

People do compare this unfavorably to New Voyages up above and yeah, Continues is way better. But as much as I openly dislike New Voyages, I do have to admit that they had less to work with. Cawley self-funded basically from scratch, while Vic up until fairly recently had a large fandom and a lot of connections he could bank on to get his show made.

Again I'm hesitant to recommend this one. Its still a kind of cringy fan production, its just in this case the fans are a much of minor celebrities. Its certainly much more watchable than New Voyages though.

Starship Exeter PNG.png

Starship Exeter: This one’s going to be a hard sell because of its age and primitive nature, but I actually prefer Starship Exeter to New Voyages and Continues. The characters are all completely new, and while the acting stuff suffers from that awkwardness that the other two have its easier to just let it slide off your brain because none of these people are trying to imitate established and well-known characters. James Culhane’s performance, for instance, isn’t going to blow you away or anything but he’s convincing enough as the Captain of the Exeter.

Additionally, I want to stress that this show is fucking old. It was shot around the early 2000s, with some of the production dating back to freaking 2002. They also obviously couldn’t afford their own CGI back then, so the special effects are a mix of After Effects-tier animated still frames that look quite hilarious. Honestly though, that effect helps capture the sometimes cheap feel of the original TOS.

Every imperfection in Exeter kind of works like that. Either you’ll be able to tolerate it or you won’t, but for me those obvious flaws are way easier to stomach than the stuff wrong with New Voyages and Continues. It’s a lot easier to forgive Exeter since its trying to be its own thing.

I do recommend this one but you have to bear its age in mind if you try to get into it. I think its a lot more approachable than the previous two anyway.

Starship Farragut.png

Starship Farragut: I unironically like this one, and I’m not completely certain why. But it is the newest of its kind and thus has had a long time to examine the mistakes and missteps of its predecessors. Its not perfect, there’s still flaws like awkward dialogue and questionable performances, but overall it’s a lot better. It seems to me that the actors leaned in the direction of trying to make their lines cheesier to alleviate the awkwardness. Which you would think would be godawful, but it actually works pretty well here. There’s also a fair share of just enjoyable performances, such as Paul Sieber who kills it as Prescott.

The production and effects of the show are also good, the CGI benefiting a great deal from contemporary software. The show just generally looks good, about as good as Continues above, but it uses brand new characters so it doesn’t fall victim to watching people try to skinwalk established characters.

Farragut animated.jpg

I was also really impressed by the two animated episodes, which were deliberately made to match the limitations that the TAS series had to deal with. With the animation of course being overall smoother and cleaner though, which is a sensible upgrade to make while still staying loyal to the premise. I’ve always had a soft spot for TAS so I legit enjoyed both of the animated episodes, and trying to match the sometimes stiff and awkward delivery the original TAS was guilty of covers up a lot of the existing flaws in the show’s performances. I even recall reading that they tracked down surviving production members of Filmation and interviewed them on tips to get the final result closer to the old stuff.

If I were to recommend only one of these to another fan, it would honestly be this one.

Star trek excalibur.jpg

Star Trek Excalibur: I did actually watch this one. I’m not really sure why since it was just a promotional video and had little going for it, but it somehow held my attention. None of the actors really do a great job, and in general there’s only a few little things I like, like the time lapse in the waiting room. Maybe this show had potential, I dunno, I’m just including it here for completeness.

The story of Star trek Excalibur is a tale of woe though, as apparently a bad lease on their studio ended with all of their sets and props being junked with no recourse and the guy behind the production being screwed out of a lot of expenses as a result. The exact details have never come to light but it’s a sad story in any case.

Will post more of these later, just wanted to get the big ones out of the way first.

PS: I absolutely do not follow the personal lives or Twitter accounts of any of the people involved in these shows, so if it turns out one of them has extreme TDS or is a degenerate furfag or something I as of right now am not aware of that, so bear that in mind.
