Democratic Rep. Mary Gay Scanlon was carjacked at gunpoint in broad daylight Wednesday afternoon in south Philadelphia's largest park following a business meeting.

The congresswoman was left unharmed, according to a statement provided to ABC News by her spokesperson, Lauren Cox.

"Wednesday afternoon, at around 2:45 p.m., Congresswoman Scanlon was carjacked at gunpoint in FDR Park following a meeting at that location. The Congresswoman was physically unharmed," Cox said in a statement.

"She thanks the Philadelphia Police Department for their swift response, and appreciates the efforts of both the Sergeant at Arms in D.C. and her local police department for coordinating with Philly PD to ensure her continued safety," the statement said.

Scanlon, who was first elected to Congress in 2018, represents the 5th Congressional District in Pennsylvania, which includes parts of south Philadelphia.

Her spokesperson confirmed that Scanlon's personal belongings, including her personal and government-issued phones and identification, were stolen by the perpetrators.

Philadelphia's mayor, Jim Kenney, released a statement condemning the incident.

"I'm appalled to learn of this violent crime that was perpetrated against my friend and colleague, Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon. Everyone deserves to feel safe in our city, and sadly, as we know, that hasn't always been the case this year. It's disheartening, and quite frankly infuriating, that criminals feel emboldened to commit such a reckless crime in the middle of the day in what should be a place of tranquility and peace—one of Philadelphia's beautiful parks," he said in a statement.

"I'm thankful that she was not physically harmed during this incident, and my thoughts are with her during what I'm sure is a traumatic time. I'm also thankful that our police officers have been working hard to identify violent criminals and get them off our streets. PPD is actively investigating this incident. We simply cannot and will not tolerate any acts of violence. If anyone has any information about this incident—or any other crime—please call or text PPD's anonymous tip line at 215-686-TIPS."

The incident comes amid a violent year in Philadelphia, which saw a spike in both gunpoint robberies and auto thefts.

Philadelphia is seeing at least an 80% increase in carjackings in 2021, compared with the total number in 2020, Philadelphia Police have said.

Democratic congresswoman who sponsored police defunding bill carjacked in crime-surging Philadelphia

Scanlon is the 2nd elected Democrat to be carjacked in a major city in the last 24 hours

By Andrew Mark Miller | Fox News
Rep. Scanlon is one of 125 co-sponsors of the Mental Health Justice Act, which aimed to place some police officers as first responders with mental health specialists. All of the bill's sponsors are Democrats. The bill's text says its purpose is "To authorize the Secretary of Health and Human Services to award grants to States and political subdivisions of States to hire, employ, train, and dispatch mental health professionals to respond in lieu of law enforcement officers in emergencies involving one or more persons with a mental illness or an intellectual or developmental disability, and for other purposes."

Im not sure that bill defunds police as much as it just changes who responds to people with mental health issues. Im not sure its a good idea though. Once one of them gets killed its back to cops or the mental health responders start asking for guns.

I hope when she called 911, they just laughed and hung up, telling her she had the wrong number and she should call the mental health line and speak to a counselor who will solve everything.

IOW--money in politicians pockets and about $5 going to actual "training" and "employment".

Oh no.
Don't the crooks know that type of crime is for unimportant plebs, not the elite
Oh no I'm so torn up I'm crying

I can’t believe how much this lady hates black people.

I kinda agree, I'm happy to mock any politician who pushed any serious defund the police policies but I'm not opposed to having a shrink show up to situations with a clearly crazy person along with the cops. Just like we have hostage negotiators at hostage situations. We've seem plenty of cop shooting videos where it 6+ cops have their guns on one crazy guy with a knife, I'm sure they can afford to swap one out for a shrink to try something. It may not work but I'm not opposed to trying it out.

Obviously sending one in without cop backup is dumb.

There's nothing wrong with the idea of sending shrinks in addition to cops. Certain self-styled "abolitionist" groups think shrinks should be sent instead of cops. That's lunacy.

I have a hard time feeling sorry for her.

Perhaps she should have been more aware of how her presence in the area enhances white supremacy or how her owning that car makes marginalized people feel.

No, I've seen this before. It's the "We have food at home" meme irl.

"Can I have public safety?"
"We have public safety at home."
But then it diverges and my public safety is the meme of the dog in a burning building going it's fine while her public safety is publicly funded private security.

Is really frustrating how sometimes the people act completely clueless as to how money works

Funding planned parenthood isn't funding abortions, it doesn't count if it's for care surrounding the abortion, no government dollar given to planned parenthood ever goes to a line item labeled abortion!

OK then eating at Chick-fil-A doesn't fund homophobia, the line item says chicken sandwich.

But if you don't buy the sandwich, they can't do their homophobia!

Yes, and if you don't fund the non-abortion services planned parenthood can't sustain itself to keep doing the abortions.

At least the sandwich shop has to go through one more organization before it reaches the thing people are trying to not fund.

Every time a politician has a personal charity as a piggy bank or they get a ridiculous speaking fee for saying nothing new or interesting. Every single time.

Especially if these sources of funding dry up as soon as they lose power.

Or if there are emails going behind your daughter's back about how she doesn't realize how her wedding was paid for.

Step 1 fund the alternative. If they can get away with it, defund the original to fund the alternative, but that only works in the most blue of cities. Pretend the alternative is not a threat to the original. Social workers and community policing are just as good as real policing!

Step 2 say that now that we have the alternative, we don't need the original anymore. Defund the original if it was not achieved in step 1.

Step 3, now that the original is defunded, criticize them for being unable to afford training. Abolish the untrained squad as if it's not your fault they're not trained.

Step 4, use public dollars to hire private security and sit back as your home is the only one protected from the next summer of love.

I'm not opposed to having a shrink show up to situations with a clearly crazy person along with the cops.
I might accept that if you can promise that the number of cops will not decrease at all. But the .gov wording states that the mental health people are intended to appear "instead of" cops instead of "in addition to" cops, and I believe it's just the first step in abolishing the police.

This bill creates a grant program for states and local governments to train and dispatch mental health professionals to respond, instead of law enforcement officers, to emergencies that involve people with behavioral health needs.

Maybe you live by reasonable people so it'll work out better over there, but over here one of the highest ranking proponents of replacing cops with mental health professionals in cases of say... Rape... Has domestic abuse allegations against him. I feel like he might have ulterior motives to decreasing the likelihood of cops appearing when you call 911.

And his son who voted to make it legal to abolish the police was running around the peaceful protests trying to put out peaceful fires by not practicing proper gun safety. If his son learned his character from his father, I don't think either of them deserves the benefit of the doubt.

And incase you didn't notice, the two people I'm using as examples represent the place that really made the "Defund the police" talks unavoidable last year, they aren't randos from bumfuck nowhere. They're literally from the place that is being held up as an example of why the police should be defunded.
