Cece Xie, who is a Harvard graduate, Yale University lecturer, and a New York City privacy attorney, shared an “unhinged” email via TikTok from a male college student who rudely attacked her for refusing to get on the phone with him for ten minutes concerning law school admissions.
The video exposing the message from the unhinged admirer has gone viral with more than 1.6 million views.
Xie works for a corporate firm and is an influencer with hundreds of thousands of TikTok and YouTube followers who tune in for legalese and a glimpse at her life as a lawyer. She gives free legal advice to her followers. Sending her a nasty email was probably not a career-enhancing move.
In the video, she explains that she received an email on Nov. 30 from the law student who she refers to as “Benjamin.” He politely asked the 30-year-old attorney if she would speak with him on the phone.
“I am currently enrolled at [redacted] for undergrad; I have plenty to say (ask rather), but I was wondering if you’d deign to share 10 minutes with me telephonically to discuss law school admissions (attempting to matriculate into Duke Law) and post-graduate opportunities?” Benjamin asked her.
“I am a big fan of your YouTube, and I can assure you it will not be [obscured] your time,” he said
“I unfortunately don’t have time to have one-on-ones with everyone who reaches out to me, but please check out [website] and my TikTok playlists for answers to some common questions I receive about law school and a legal career,” Xie answered him.
She also told Benjamin that he could submit specific questions to her website if he did not find the answer he was looking for on her social media sites.
She was shocked went he sent her a caustic reply, coming unglued because she would not speak with him on the phone.
“I have an extremely hard time believing your ‘following’ is that abundant. You have plenty of time for a 10-minute call,” Benjamin caustically told her.
“It costs you nothing, makes you nothing. But it makes sense: You are still young and had to fight hard for the position(s) you occupy currently. You will become more charitable and altruistic as you age and gain material success,” Benjamin snarled.
“Just remember, there is always time. Go tell Jeff Bezos (or even your senior partner for that matter) that you don’t have time. Lastly, 9/10 of the dolts hitting you up are just time-sucking tire kickers that have no potential. Thanks for your microaggressive civility,” he blasted the young attorney.
Unbelievably, he was dumb enough to send it from his professional account with his employer’s name listed on it.
“My first inclination was to email your college, email Duke Law admissions, and also email your employer that was in your email signature,” Xie shot back.
She told her followers that after due consideration she decided not to contact his employer etc. However, she said that she would not forget the “unhinged” email.
“But, I know that professionalism dictates that you should never send emails or other communications in the heat of the moment. Like Benjamin did,” Xie remarked.
“Law is a small world, and I’ve gotten questions from friends before, looking to hire my former colleagues or acquaintances. And if I’ve had a bad experience with someone, I’m gonna tell the truth. So, Benjamin, for your sake, I hope our paths never cross again,” she warned him.
