Why are older video games so hard?

This thread makes me think of playing Ghosts 'n Goblins when I was a kid. I was so determined to finish it only to get to the end and have to start all over from the beginning.

I think some of those old games had arcade versions as well so you'd have to dump more money into the machine to keep playing
