At the moment of death, the muscles relax completely—a condition called "primary flaccidity." The muscles then stiffen, perhaps due to coagulation of muscle proteins or a shift in the muscle's energy containers (ATP-ADP), into a condition known as rigor mortis. All of the body's muscles are affected. Rigor mortis begins within two to six hours of death, starting with the eyelids, neck, and jaw. This sequence may be due to the difference in lactic acid levels among different muscles, which corresponds to the difference in glycogen levels and to the different types of muscle fibers. Over the next four to six hours, rigor mortis spreads to the other muscles, including those in the internal organs such as the heart. The onset of rigor mortis is more rapid if the environment is cold and if the decedent had performed hard physical work just before death. Its onset also varies with the individual's age, sex, physical condition, and muscular build.

After being in this rigid condition for twenty-four to eighty-four hours, the muscles relax and secondary laxity (flaccidity) develops, usually in the same order as it began. The length of time rigor mortis lasts depends on multiple factors, particularly the ambient temperature. The degree of rigor mortis can be determined by checking both the finger joints and the larger joints and ranking their degree of stiffness on a one- to three- or four-point scale. Many infant and child corpses will not exhibit perceptible rigor mortis. This decreased perceptible stiffness may be due to their smaller muscle mass.
During this period, the body gradually cools in a process called algor mortis. The best way to accurately assess a corpse's temperature is with a core (tympanic membrane, liver, or rectal) thermometer. Rectal insertion may be difficult and cause postmortem injury.

When Barb dies, there's gonna be a whole new special issue of Sonichu commemorating this. It's gonna a waterworks fest I tell ya.
 
I was actually wondering, how independent is Chris now? What does Barb even do anymore? I mean, look at her, she acts like a 15-year-old dog. I used to think Chris having no parents to support him would be the end of his world, but now I'm wondering if it would only be a slight inconvenience (excluding the obvious emotional damage and the matter of having that huge expensive house he can't afford).

Chris is the master of the house, but the power transferred so gradually that he didn't notice it.

I wonder if you have Chris play act with a handpuppet, and then trick him into having the handpuppet boss him around. Because that seems to be the next step.

Heh, actually, maybe that's the strategy to getting Chris to survive post-Barb. Spend a few months developing an imaginary friend with Chris, except it's a 50 year old man who reads consumer reports and sorts his recycling before taking it to the curb. Chris would forever be bitching about how mean his roommate is for making him save money and be responsible.
 
the healthcare professional in me desperately wants to call adult services for Barb. doesn't matter what kind of person she was in the past, there's nothing in that head of hers now. the fact that fat tranny fuck is going to Bronycon now and quite possibly leaving her alone in that state is kinda gross.

i've been observing chris, barb and bob god rest his soul, using the knowledge i have of medicine/social care/psychology pretty much from the start.
if i have a few drinks in me, i can be what's considered an a-log sometimes, and i'm also pretty prone to sperging when i witness people with absolutely no expertise in the fields i'm involved with diagnosing him and such. so i keep my posts and interaction regarding the chandlers to a minimum. hence why i've only just signed up here. i think we've reached one of the most interesting eras in 'christory' from the point of view i have.

Does Barb actually require 24 hour care? Could there be a 3rd party individual who checks in on her, maybe Rocky Shoemaker?
 
I hate to break it to everyone but now that Barb's dementia has been all but confirmed it's not a matter of "what will happen when Barb dies?" but "what will happen when Chris or someone else gets power of attorney or guardianship over Barb?"

A lot could happen pretty quick once the papers are signed.

from my point of view, yes. i can only speak from what i've seen but i think she should be in a nursing home if there isn't any charities or healthcare available to teach chris how to properly care for her. i've seen other seniors with similar issues to Barb and they require help to shower, use the toilet, they require help with eating etc and wander off a lot. even if she could look after herself to a degree, there would be the issue of how frail she has become. one wrong move in that death trap of a house and she could end up injured pretty bad. i can bet she probably has some missed or unhealed hairline fractures.

there's tech that could help her out in the realms of fall sensors, automatic lights, automatic shut-off for gas, water and electric etc. a lot of people seem to think chris is dumb, but he can drive which proves he can be taught to use a lot of aids that could help barb out (if he WANTED to) and i believe he could become a proper carer to her with some education. not sure if rocky is still in touch with the chandlers but if she isn't, i wonder if anyone could convince chris to get in touch with local charities, there should be some that could help him. i think a lot of people forget that barb must be scared a lot of the time and suffering.

edit: if chris could prove he could become barb's official carer, that's more money for the tugboat, more money for fucking transformers. barb would be comfortable, chris would be happy.

until the bill collectors come a-knockin at the start of the month, causing chris to get stressed and beg for money

I doubt that Chris has the discipline to properly take care of her. He could probably learn the ropes to pass a test but that's it.

I wouldn't underestimate him. I've seen people a lot worse than Chris (in some ways) become real effective carers for their loved ones. Their interactions are a little weird but you can see he cares deeply for her in his own fucked up little way.
 
Even in her current state Barb's gonna outlive Chris. Old bitter crones like her always live to like 120.

The real question is what happens when the creditors finally catch up to Barb, that's probably two years tops.
