I think part of this is more of a thing for asphyxiation and some kind of denial thing due to how hard he was blowing on the balloons and waiting for the sweet respite of it popping or it reaching some pre-supposed limit before it pops so he can catch his own breath from the light-headed high.
He figured out how to partially self-asphyxiate himself and the random tolerances of the balloons he uses are the random unpredictable denial/delay.
