Started La-Mulana 2 this weekend and it might be the first game I've played in 2018 and I hope to play it some more this week. It's just fantastic and has everything I like:
The exaggerated 80's style cover to set the tone! Wow just imagine what this game will be!
Oh it looks like that...
There's weird and charmy humor(sorry, they get better, this is the a screen I found) that you get by scanning things or via texts and when visiting the locals who always helps themselves to your number and maybe give you an app they've written.
That's the overworld with merchants and such.
Puzzling! There is combat but enemies are just in your way so you can get to all of that puzzling in the game. When you figure out the solution to some of them... Good times.
Like this one. There's a lot going on in the screen with the goddesses, things you understand after playing for a bit, that makes you go "ooooh" when you start to have an idea of what to do.
The game plays like a Castlevania game when it comes to movement and jumping, it feels heavy and deliberate plus you have a whip, but the overall game is like a Metroidvania with some Myst fragrance sprayed over it.
It's not too punishing either(not yet for me at least) and the first hour lets you explore and figure things out. There's also save-stones and at any time you can warp back to anyone one of them, just froom bossfights if you want. What is challenging is having to think and notice things in the environments, clues in texts, visual clues by looking at statues etc. It's hard to describe, but it's really good, there's such a great satisfaction to have figured things out.
The story is also really cool, something that should be up the alley of Earthboud/Mother fans, but that cat was out of the bag after the first game but they have created a really fun setup for a sequel.
It's 20 bagels on steam/GOG right now and I highly recommend it.
