Can someone here make a resume for the lot of us who couldn't keep up with US politics on why things came to this point in the House?
Because politics became team sports. And the left and their lapdogs in the media became addicted to demonizing anyone to the right of them. Since Obama at least. And then Trump won in 2016 and the uniparty began to go scorch earth on anyone who supported him / were against the uniparty grift.

Nah this is the party known for losing with dignity and principles. They’ll just say that compromising with the Democrats means socialism so it’s better just to lose to the Democrats.

Why should Republicans care about losing? It's not like most of them can be fired. They can just make the right noises at their donors and sit back and enjoy taxpayer funded dinners and flights. Even if there are people that want to effect real change, we know from the past the established parties will ensure that no one messes with their soap opera grift.

The fact Trump even got in must've been a massive miscalculation on their part. Which would explain the massive expansion of internet censorship that started soon after. And we now know through released documents and testimony most of the departments were directed to misinform or omit info in order to hamstring him while they ran out the clock.

Democracies might not be exactly like Dictatorships, but theres always softer ways to deal with dissent and political threats.

McCarthy conceded to a lot of the Freedom Caucus's biggest demands but they still want him out.
No. They want the ablity to out any speaker should they not do what they promised. Which seems fair. You never want to give power to someone with no way to remove them.

I am honestly shocked that the MAGA candidate front has managed to pull this off. It's such a genius move it almost makes me mad I had not considered it.

They literally cannot lose ANY support from their own people. They can stay retarded forever, refusing to vote and nominating random people and Trump, and nothing will happen. This is perfectly legal and any attempt to stop it means officially burning the constitution. The GOP walked into the trap like a complete moron, it didn't not even occur to the likes of McCarthy and his bosses the Freedom Caucasus would possibly not vote in line with the party.

If they "compromise" with the Democrats into some sort of coalition government, they lose the legitimacy to claim to being opposition and the MAGA gets their point made of the GOP wanting to kill them. If the GOP conceeds and elects someone else they are mortally wounded and forced to try and expel MAGA.

Absolutely insane shit. And it is only the 5th day of the year. My God, 2023 will be wild.

Has anyone actually made a sales pitch about how indispensable Kevin McCarthy is? Is he some kind of irreplaceable communicator or negotiator?

The longer this goes on the more the dog doesn’t bark.

Edit: this whole thing is giving me Canadian Trucker vibes; leviathan underestimates scrappy rebels who show up with a novel tactic. The Borg can’t really punch back without removing the mask too much, hilarity ensues.

Concessions are done at this point - the FC doesn't have any trust that McCarthy will actually deliver on anything he promises them.
Well they'd be retarded to stop at this point, they're already probably marked for assassination of character if not arkancide.

Shot, king, don't miss, etc.

They try and expel MAGA people and the uniparty is laid bare for all to see. Which fucks them too.

GOP is fucked either way.

Now on the 10th vote.

The CSPAN graphics team that does the vote count has given up hope and now it's just raw video with no tally.

You have a point there. They can't punch back without admitting the whole thing is a façade.

The whole reason there is a vote on speaker is to work out stuff like this. The entire design of the system was for this to happen. This isn't a bug, it's a feature. The rejection of the speaker by a small minority and demands to negotiate on a new one are literally what the Founding Fathers intended the process to do. The only reason it doesn't normally happen is because for the last 100 years the voting has been made into a simple rubber stamp as the negotiations happen inside the DNC or RNC beforehand. Except even that has been dropped on the last few years apparently.

McCarthy had already moved his stuff into the office. The entire cerimony was already set to happen. Then the MAGA 20 decided to do a little trolling by actually following the rules.

The entire counter argument at this point is pretty much cope. You can check back a few pages and see Sean Hannity going full retard on Bobert and insisting she has to vote for McCarthy, to which she replies "no I don't trust him and his promisses" at which point Hannity gets mega mad and just doubles down she HAS TO VOTE FOR HIM COME ON!

There is no argument being made. They never even expected to have to justify their puppet pick to anyone, much less have to argue with their own party people breaking ranks with them in public like this. They did not even consider this a possibility, and they cannot tell the truth and say "he paid for it and is lobbying for the right donors" without losing even more face.

Genius.

Never forget that establishment/dem lite republicans fired the first shots here, in doing everything they can to not support and even sabotage candidates picked by the voters.

I hope he has the balls to stay the course.

I'll say this much, if they last longer than Trump's government shutdown, then they deserve a shitload of props.

If they can drag it out a lot longer than Trump's shutdown, then I think the era of blaming Trump for populism, and calling populism "Trumpism", is over.
